About the Author

Gil Gilpatrick has spent his life in outdoor Maine. For 26 years he was an instructor of Outdoor Resources at the Skowhegan Regional Vocational Center. His other major occupation was, and still is, guiding wilderness canoe trips in northern Maine. Gil considers his life, combining these careers, an ideal blend of his love of the outdoors and that of making hand crafted items. "To see a need, and then set out to fill that need is the most satisfying thing I can think of to do," says the author. But Gil also takes great pleasure in seeing others enjoy the items he has developed and perfected. He has never made any of his gear commercially, rather preferring to make a few for friends and writing about them for others. Gil is a prolific writer and, besides writing free-lance articles when time permits, he is a regular columnist for Maine’s Northwoods Sporting Journal, a monthly publication about outdoor Maine.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GEAR PROJECTS, September 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Building Outdoor Gear (Plastic Comb)
Gil Gilpatrick has written a very precise and clear guidebook for the construction of some very useful and clever outdoor gear. After reading the book completely I was able to tackle the construction of two food packs using methods and materials that I had previously never used. The projects shown in the book reflect a lifetime working and living outdoors, written in a no-nonsense style, are simple and functional. I gave the book four stars for the sole reason that I hope Gil Gilpatrick writes a new edition with more projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book., September 5, 2009
This review is from: Building Outdoor Gear (Paperback)
Gil is the modern day pioneer. Making your own outdoor equipment is fun and rewarding. I just made a gear box and gathering wood for a paddle, Gil style. Thanks Gil for taking us back to a simpler day.
