Book Description

2008
Building Patterns was written for students who are new to patternmaking in that it starts with tools and ends with creating garments. With every exercise, students broaden their skill level and gain a deeper understanding of the art of patternmaking. However, for those with some patternmaking knowledge, the text can be used as a reference or one can pick and choose specific exercises they want to focus on. The information is broken down into 11 subjects, which are fully explored before moving on. In addition, the diagrams are clear and easy to follow which makes the book ideal for visual learners. The text can be applied using individual body measurements. The text begins with an INTRODUCTION to patternmaking tools and a primer on understanding patterns and patternmaking language. The next subject, SKIRTS (37 exercises), starts with how to draft slopers (templates) then instructs on how to draft flares, pleats, gores, yokes, linings, and many others. MOULAGE shows how to make an upper body sloper. DART MANIPLATION (16 exercises) covers moving style lines around a bodice and turning darts into flare, pleats, etc. LINES (10 exercises) gives instruction on how to draft princess lines, empire lines, a-lines and more. NECKLINES (16 exercises) covers drafting boat, scalloped, and strapless necklines among others. The next chapter, COLLARS (17 exercises) covers a wide range of styles from basic collars to more advanced collars. SLEEVES (24 exercises) demonstrates 3 slopers and moves onto basic sleeves like the bell, puff and cap, through to more advanced sleeves with plackets, pleats and cuffs. POCKETS (12 exercises) covers patch, in-seam and welt pockets. PANTS (26 exercises) shows how to draft slack, jean and trouser slopers as well as how to draft a button or zipper fly, a yoke, cuffs, linings and more. The textbook wraps up with how to put all the pieces together to make full GARMENTS. 260 Pages

Buy this book! It will unravel the mysteries of making apparel patterns. I have two college degrees plus advanced studies in apparel design. Yet Suzy Furrer's patternmaking methods opened my eyes and made the process of patterning a pleasure. I have since used her methods to create my own line of garments -- StudioSKB. Her book is the text for my patterning classes at Art Institute of Portland and Portland Sewing. From moulage to slopers to creating designs, the step-by-step instructions are easy to use and understand. It simply makes sense!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of "Building Patterns" by Suzy Furrer November 1, 2008
Wow - this book is fabulous. It's a wealth of information, it's clearly and beautifully presented, it's not intimidating, it covers everything, and I love the format and the cover design and the plastic covering. So sensible. Suzy has given any asiring patternmaker all they need to know. It deserves to become the definitive pattern-making text!

This book (and Suzy's teaching) gave me everything I needed to know to develop my patternmaking skills and start my own line of clothing. It covers the basics (like how to create a moulage, skirts and various lines) as well as more advanced topics (like collars, sleeves, pants, tops, dresses and how to go about creating a line of clothing). Suzy gives step by step instruction on each topic and makes it really easy to follow along. You'll be amazed at what you're able to do!

To top it off, Suzy's approach to fit is spectacular. I've consulted many other moulage books that don't do anywhere near the job Suzy does to obtain an accurate, flattering fit. And, let's face it, this is where it all begins.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Building Patterns by Suzy Furrer November 1, 2008

I have tried several self-teaching books before "Building Patterns-Architecture of Women's Clothing" by Suzy Furrer. This is the best book so far. The book is very easy to use; the exercises are structured well and easy to follow even for someone with little or no patternmaking experience. Having completed all of the exercises I am not only able to create a pattern for any garment that a I can dream up but the finished garments fit beautifully. Suzy Furrer makes patternmaking, which intimidated me for many years, simple and fun. This is a wonderful book and I cannot recommend it enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Building Patterns The Architecture of Women's Clothing October 31, 2008
Suzy Furrer has done a wonderful job! This is a "must have" compendium for the serious pattern drafting student as well as the avid hobbyist. I have been using and teaching this method for years and the product is always a superbly drafted garment that hangs well and flatters the figure. Thank you, Suzy, for all your hard work!!!

This book is simple and easy to follow which help me as a visual learner. The procedures is very similar to what I have been taught. If you are drafting your own patterns or just want help to understand the construction of commercial patterns, I would suggest getting this one as a reference book. Suzy Furrer, did a nice job on this book!

It contains introductions to pattermaking tools,
drafting skirts and lining,
creating a mold (moulage) of upper body,
dart manipulations or moving seam lines, creating lines for pattern of jacket, blouses, dresses and coat,
necklines and facing,
collars,
sleeves,
pockets,
pant,
garment creations and working with your base sloper (test garment).

Glad I purchased this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars I actually bought this book. IT IS UNFORGIVABLY BAD March 30, 2011

Unlike the other reviewers, I'm not a friend of the author, or know her because I took her class (did she give extra credit if you gave her book a good review?)
I actually bought this book, and found it to be terrible.

She speaks as if English were a second language, and as if she is used to explaining things with gestures, which is fine, but an editor should have made things clear to the reader, since it is a book, and your supposed to be able to understand it.

Instead of "to the left of" or "above" or "below" she just says "out".
Example:
"Create a 2 inch box out from line c."

Where is out???? Parallel to line C?

The problem is further compounded by lack of punctuation.
Example: (not from book, but gives a very good idea of the actual)
"C-D equals the amount removed from that line Across from E, Make C-D the new line."
Is that supposed to be three sentences, or two sentence with a capitol A at "Across" for no reason?

There is a spot in the main draft where the directions are completely muddled.

This is extremely unfortunate, because, the nature of this drafting method is tedious, and mathematical.

Because the book fails to communicate steps, however faithfully you follow the directions, you hit a wall. So the entire rest of the book becomes useless because everything is based on that main draft.

Intially, I kept trying to use this book, but yeilded nothing but absolute failure.
I fell into a bleek sewing dispair of hopelessness.
Eventually, I stopped trying to make sense of this ridiculous book, and I found better, more accurate, detailed information on pattern drafting on internet, for free, and have finally made progress.
