Practical Studio Design Tips,
By Stephen B. Ward (White Plains, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Building a Recording Studio (Plastic Comb)
Cooper's book is an excelent source of practical tips on studio design. He covers all aspects of soundproofing (isolating the studio from sound transmission) as well as improving the acoustics of interior of the studio and control room.Particularly useful are the illustrations showing different ways to construct the walls and flooring. I use these as examples in courses that I teach in Acoustics. The book is highly readable, without a lot of unnecessary formulas and theory that one commonly finds in bools on this topic. I highly recommend this book to someone interested in building a home, project, or even a commercial recording studio. The small investment made in purchasing this book is worthwhile compared to the expense of having to correct acoustical problems down the road. Stephen B. Ward, Professor of Music Industry and Technology Mercy College, White Plains, NY.

Extremely clear and helpful book!,

As someone unfamiliar with construction techniques, this book was a god send to me. The writing is clear and straightforward, and it contains a series of easy to understand illustrations showing construction details. From my simplistic laymen's perspective, I can say that after reading this book, I was able to have intelligent and informed conversations with architects and contractors regarding my studio. I'm sure readers who know how to swing a hammer will feel prepared to do a lot more than just talk.

building a recording studio,

This book was excellant. I have read many studio books- this one takes a few extra steps to setup a more professional envirionment then just converting a garage. I am in my 4th phase-building a house with an addition for the studio; and used this book for development of the floor plan

One of the best practical aproaches to studio design,
By Pedro Amengual Gomila "Pere" (Palma de Mallorca, Illes Balears Spain) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Building a Recording Studio (Plastic Comb)
After reading lots of boring Acoustics books, I had already given up on finding a book with "PRACTICAL" advice on how to build a studio. The only negative point about this one is that maybe it is a bit scarce on contents (only 200 pages)... Once read the book, one wishes it had a sequel!

Essential resource!,

Jeff Cooper "nails" every relevent topic on the construction of a modern recording studio. Not for the faint of heart (or wallet) as these construction tecniques are hardly ever followed in today's home studios. But at the least, you'll know how to do it right and why the real built-up studios should get the big bucks!

Mr. Cooper has a very easy way of making the difficult read easy. A lot of information is packed into this fine manual, enough to satisfy an introductory or beginner level home recording studio builders needs.
Many areas are deep enough to be satisfying. Sketched pictures are included that are helpful but go into no depth for the reader to achieve some of the construction designs. To his credit, Mr. Cooper does read his email messages and did get back to me on a question that I had. Plus one! It is good, it isn't complete. If you are well versed in construction and have an above average grasp on isolation techniques and treatments involved in taming standing waves, flutter and room interference, you may not need this information. If you are starting out gathering information to develop a quality recording studio, then you should start with this book. EDIT: October 04, 2010 $239.00, really? I paid $30.00(USD) last year and it was worth that! In this day and age of Internet access, it just is not worth that price. You can get a lot of information directly from my website @ [...] No charge, ever ;)

Very useful.,

In my opinion this is a good book. Helps you solve some problems of existing acoustical environments and provides great info on building rooms "from the ground" as well.
Now, the author him self says that going deeper on some stuff is beyond the scope of the book, but I think a little bit more wouldn't hurt. Other aspects are it is really easy to read and have some nice drawings of every detail approached by the text. That helps you with ideas to be developed. I think that this is a very good book for anyone seeking basic reference to rely on.

Informative & Resourceful,
By Dan (Adelaide, South Australia, Australia) - See all my reviews

I purchased this book years ago and it proved to be a great instructional workbook. It certainly helped me in some
of the recording studios I'd worked in. Back then I payed around $30 through MIX Bookshelf. A few years later I lent the book to someone and it was never returned. Suffice to say I will never pay the ridiculous exorbitant prices asked for here. I really don't know why Amazon allow these dealers to get away with ripping people off. It's a joke.

ok but not great,
This review is from: Building a Recording Studio (Plastic Comb)
its a good book. Its got a simple writing and explains things in a simple way and takes you through all of the concepts of a recording studio, such as sound, and acoustics. However it could have more tips to help people who are building studios on low budgets. I would recommend it. After all its impossible for one book to teach you everything.

One of the best books on recording studio acoustics!,
By
This review is from: Building a Recording Studio (Plastic Comb)
This is the first and the best in a very long series of books concerning recording studio acoustics. Jeff Cooper was one of the pioneers in studying and building recording studios and though this book is very compact, it contains much of his knowledge in a precise and very simple way. This book manages to make a very complicated matter accesible to everyone who has an interest in building either a recording studio or a listening room.
