Book Description

December 1, 2000
This friendly and accessible guide leads teachers and students through the creation of a school Web site, providing a hands-on project and learning experience for both. Students learn to participate in the Web not only as surfers but also, more important, as authors and creators. The big picture is presented, including basic HTML, using a Web editor, standards, bandwidth, search engine placement, and animation. The details are fleshed out with simple, step-by-step directions, making this the ideal choice for beginners wishing to create a simple Web site and to gain a better understanding of the Web itself.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-8-This simple guide is divided into two sections. Wigglebits first provides the basic commands used in writing HTML. These commands consist of five pieces of a Web page-files, words, pictures, colors, and links-with step-by-step instructions that allow readers to follow along and create a Web page using either a Mac or a PC. The second section shows the ease of using an HTML editor. Common terminology and buttons as well as steps are explained. Other topics touched on include push and pull communications, Web addresses, search engines, use of tags, bandwidth and pixels, Internet standards, and instructions for creating animation. Straightforward directions make the process easy to follow yet some unnecessary explanations may be disconcerting to those who have never been exposed to HTML code. Overall, there is no consistency to the organization.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE

From the Author

Hi, I’m Wanda Wigglebits, the author of “Building A School Web Site.” In my book, I encourage folks to actually write some of the language that makes the Web tick – Hyper Text Markup Language, or HTML. Like learning arithmetic before using a calculator, learning a little HTML not only provides a crucial framework for understanding the Web, it provides an important skill and a sense of mastery. And anyway, it’s fun! So no shilly-shallying about learning some HTML! It’s not rocket science. You can do it, girlfriend. And you too, big guy! It’s fun. Trust me, honey. When you put those first few lines of HTML in a file and then look at them in your browser, you’ll feel like you can conquer the world!

5.0 out of 5 stars Building a School Website Really Works, December 19, 2000
By
Pat Reich (Northbrook, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Building a School Web Site : A Hands-on Project for Teachers and Kids (Paperback)
I teach in an elementary school and we wanted our teachers to develop more of a web presence for our school. I used Wanda's book to instruct the teachers how to build classroom web pages. This book gave them all the basic information they needed about the web, html, gifs and animated gifs. Then, when the teachers worked in a web editor, they had some concept of how it worked. This book is a must for schools just developing a web site or teachers trying to develop pages for their class. I believe our 4th and 5th graders could use it to learn to create web pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone wanting to create a website for their class, October 10, 2001
This review is from: Building a School Web Site : A Hands-on Project for Teachers and Kids (Paperback)
Wanda Wigglebit's Building A School Web Site is the ideal "how to" guide for anyone wanting to create a website for their class or school but don't know how. Teachers and their students are provided with a hands-on project with "user friendly" and accessible instruction that covers every aspect (HTML, web editors, standards, bandwidth, search engine placement, animation, etc.) of building a school website. If you are inexperienced with developing and operating a website for your class or school, then begin by a careful reading of Wanda Wigglebits' Building A School Web Site!
