Creative Insight into self-improvement, August 11, 2006
This review is from: Building Self-Esteem: The Christian Dimension (Paperback)
Building Self-Esteem is a book to read/study/reference and meditate upon. For those like me, looking to enhancing their lives it is thought evoking, encourages self-expansion and helps to build spiritual awareness besed on Christian principles.
Anselm Gruen is a theologan and an experienced psychologist and exceptional spiritual counsellor. He has a deep perception of every day life problems and is able to portray humanity, the world and its failings in a positive and spiritual way.
To me personally, this book is a self-help training manual, a non-directive counselling tool which helps in developing self-understanding, self-awareness, self-respect, self-confidence. Anselm Gruen's creative approach to life, confronts, challenges and encourages positive responses to human failings. He suggests practical ways of expanding ones capabilities both physically and spiritually without hampering the freedom and dignity of the individual.
I currently use the book by re-reading a small part at a time while travelling to work in the morning. This allows me to reflect further during the day.

glossy trip through complex terrain, June 28, 2008
This review is from: Building Self-Esteem: The Christian Dimension (Paperback)
I read this in a book group and found that I couldn't get any traction with it. Every chapter felt like it was an overview. Somehow, I couldn't really connect with the ideas in the book. They did seem a little glossy, a little too facile and the author had a little of that "I know" kind of tone which is off-putting for me.
I was looking for text that made me search deep inside or where I said to myself "Wow" as I connected some dots that I never had before.
This book seems to me like familiar territory for anyone who has lived even a slightly "examined" life.
