Anyone who is at all concerned about the future of Judaism, particularly in the United States, must read this book and follow its recommendations. I have strongly urged the board of my synagogue to buy it and read it, and am in the process of working through what it has to offer.

Also of tremendous interest are downloadable Shabbat melodies recorded by the author, Joey Weisenberg, for the Kane Street Synagogue:
[...] These are a wonderful, useful companion to the book.

This book is a much-needed blessing. Thank you, Joey Weisenberg!

This book will prove a fantastic tool for the most progressive and the most traditional of leaders, followers, ba'alei tefillah both experienced and aspiring, and all who hope to revitalize their shul's davenning. Joey's approach to innovation in existing communities is gentle and even-handed, and he addresses not only the desires and needs of those who are fired up about change, but also the concerns of those who are more reticent. The musical advice and instruction provided in this book can benefit the rankest of beginners and the musically advanced prayer-leader, ranging from strategies for following and remembering basic melodies to more advanced music theory. He provides superb advice and encouragement to anyone hoping to be a leader, while also empowering congregants to be active followers. The companion CD (available here: [...] ) which includes many of the melodies transcribed in the book, provides a taste of what a singing community can sound like when things go right.

Joey's unique vision for building inclusive, participatory singing communities is a much needed contribution to modern prayer groups, regardless of age, size, or affiliation. Having sung - and lead - in his High Holiday services for the past 3 years, I can attest both to Joey's innovations and insights in davenning experiences, as well as to his incredible talent and breadth of musical knowledge. Above all, Joey strives to build relationships through shared musical experiences, and with the practical tips and colorful analogies in this book, he makes it easy for you to embark on your own journey as a leader of prayer and song.

This book isn't going to work for all congregations, but lots of practical information and encouragement. I'd love to have the author come to our congregation for a workshop.
