If you are new to managing a group of web developers maybe..,

This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
The only person I'd recommend this book to is a person that is going to manage a group of web developers, and only then if you don't have prior web development experience! As far as the Sybase keyword in the title, forget it! The best you get is a 2 year old copy of Sybase Product literature.... The Sybase Tool Info is all outdated. There is a small amount of info that might be good concept material for a new web developer, nothing that couldn't be easily learned on some of the helpful websites. Take note, THERE IS NO source code in the book, and little or no consideration for the UNIX user... I would recommend your money be spent elsewhere...

Not a book for Unix/Sybase web server builders,
By A Customer
This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
If you are like me looking for guides in building Sybase-based web servers on unix machines, you can safely stay away from this book. It says practically nothing about sybperl, dbi and that sort of creatures.

An Outstanding Broad-Based Coverage,

This is a GREAT book! I was asked by my boss to figure out what it would take to place our inventory database on the Web for our suppliers to access. This book not only showed me a number of ways to do that, but gave me some great tips. This is NOT a book to buy if you want to learn how to do Sybase programming. It clearly states it though in the front matter. But, if you already know how to access a Sybase database and want to learn how to couple a Sybase database with a Web application, then this is a "must buy" book.

Not an advanced book, good for new programmers,

The book is good enough for a person to learn sybase and we-sites, but no good if you are familiar with sybase. It's not an advanced book.

Very Disappointing--Not at all what I expected,
This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
When I bought this book, I expected to learn HOW to create a website that accesses a Sybase Database. If you are trying to learn the same thing, then this book is a real waste of time. This book does a good job of telling you what you need in your website, but it does nothing to tell you how to get it there. It is very informative on the different possibilities out there for a Web-based database, but then you will need to buy other books that show you how to physically write the code for the website (i.e.-CGI Script, PERL, SQL, etc.). All included, this book helped me to understand the scope of the project, and what needed to be done. However, I think he could have done that in about 100 pages, rather than 400 pages.

This book is quite bad.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
This book was written with no regard to any UNIX sybase systems and seems to be a manual for the online tools that are provided with the book. It does not actual tell you how to do anything but rather what approach you you should take if you were going to do it. I'll be returning this book.

A Good Book - Hit The Mark!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
This book was exactly what I needed. It introduced me to the concepts of building a Web-enabled database application, and showed be how all the different pieces could fit together.Although the book did not teach or show me how to establish an ODBC connection to a Sybase database from a Perl script, this didn't bother me. I can get that information from my dba or a Perl book. But I did find it most useful to be able to see exactly what happens in a Web application from start to finish. This was a very powerful book, well written, and hit the target as advertised on the jacket. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out designing or building a Web database application.

Very Comprehensive and Well-Written,

This review is from: Building Sybase Web Sites (Prentice Hall Ptr Building a Web Site Series) (Paperback)
As a beginner, I found this book to be extremely helpful in explaining how to incorporate a database into my web page. The chapters flowed logically and described every topic clearly. The author anticipates every question the reader might have and answers them even before they enter the reader's mind. A very well-written and comprehensive piece.
