Book Description

0195061462 978-0195061468 September 9, 1993 First edition.
Examining the architecture of the nation's capital, Pamela Scott and Antoinette J. Lee divide the city into fourteen sections, from the Mall to the area southeast of the Anacostia River. The book includes entries on all major public and government buildings, monuments and memorials, residential buildings and neighborhoods, parks and recreational areas, and commercial and industrial centers. Within this city-wide survey, the volume also traces the various changes in Washington's architectural character from the Revolutionary War to the post-World War II era.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Washington has always had its share of guidebooks, but for nearly 20 years has lacked one devoted solely to its architecture--ample reason to celebrate the publication this month of Buildings of the District of Columbia....For layman and specialist alike this will become a standard first stop on a research trail....This is a fine, much-needed book. Lee and Scott deserve thanks and huge success."--The Washington Post

"Some of the best and brightest writers and scholars in the field are behind this series....This looks like a classic series in the making."--The Boston Globe

Without hesitation I'd give 10 stars to this work, if you offered us that option. The authors know their topic and the facts presented are hard to secure through any other means. This is a terrific resource for those visiting or living in our Nation's Capital. A pure delight to read. Very accomplished work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buildings of the District of Columbia, August 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Buildings of the District of Columbia (Buildings of the United States) (Hardcover)
The book has a wealth of information on buildings in Washington, D.C., however, I was disappointed not to find some buildings of interest to me in my research. I am particularly interested in the work of Gertrude Sawyer who designed and built an Art Deco style building for the Junior League on Dupont Circle which was not in the book. She also built the home for Nathan Scott which is the home of the President of American University.
