More About the Author

Clive Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt(R), in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.
Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.
In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization.
In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.
Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. His past international bestsellers include Pacific Vortex, Mediterranean Caper, Iceberg, Raise the Titanic, Vixen 03, Night Probe, Deep Six, Cyclops, Treasure, Dragon, Sahara, Inca Gold, Shock Wave, Flood Tide, Atlantis Found, Valhalla Rising, Trojan Odyssey, Black Wind, Treasure of Kahn and Arctic Drift (the last three with his son, Dirk Cussler) as well as The Chase; the nonfiction books The Sea Hunters, The Sea Hunters II and Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (R) Revealed; the NUMA(R) Files novels Serpent, Blue Gold, Fire Ice, White Death, Lost City, Polar Shift, The Navigator and Medusa (written with Paul Kemprecos); and the Oregon Files novels Sacred Stone and Golden Buddha (written with Craig Dirgo) and Dark Watch, Skeleton Coast, Plague Ship and Corsair (written with Jack Du Brul).
Clive Cussler lives in Arizona.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Coffee Table Book / and Dirk Pitt as well, November 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Built for Adventure: The Classic Automobiles of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (Hardcover)
First off let me state that my book doesn't appear to have any binding problems. I have been sitting and going through for several days now and not a problem with the binding. So, while I know another reviewer had problems my copy doesn't appear to have any issues.

The pictures are really well done, the paper quality is good and there is lots to look at. You don't just get one small picture of each car but you often get multiple pictures showing the exterior, the interior and anything of special interest, such as specialty hub caps. The detail is great and I couldn't be happier with the quality.

The description of each car is good yet not overly technical. I enjoy the way each description is written and don't think that I will grow bored over looking through this book in the days, months and years to come.

The bonus feature is knowing the background story of the novels that Dirk Pitt appears in while driving one of these cars, or maybe even our good Van Dorn Detective Isaac Bell.

I was a bit taken back by the cost, but then realized that this is a coffee table book and would have lots of color pictures that are not cheap to print and reproduce.

After receiving my copy, I'm pleased with the quality and with the price. I will enjoy this book for many years to come and think if you are a Clive Cussler fan and enjoy cars that you will also enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Car Book, November 7, 2011
This review is from: Built for Adventure: The Classic Automobiles of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (Hardcover)
I wanted to wait and hopefully receive this from my wife for Christmas, but once I picked it up at the bookstore I couldn't put it down. Should have ordered it from Amazon though. The photographs and scenery are fantastic! Not to mention the cars themselves. I would recommend this to anyone that is NOT a car buff. Even my wife Marge loved it. She actually enjoyed reading the stories about the cars, because it was not all technical. The fun part is reading how Cussler acquired the cars. Not a big fiction reader, so I didn't know he used some of the cars in his stories. Guess now I'll have to order one of his novels. We plan to order "Built for Adventure" for my son for Xmas. He can't have mine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, November 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Built for Adventure: The Classic Automobiles of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (Hardcover)
Unlike many car books, this one is a great read. Not overly technical, each car comes with a well written bit of history. Of course the fact that Dirk Pitt drove many of them brings a whole other level of interest.
