About the Author

Clive Cussler is the author of many New York Times bestsellers, most recently The Spy and Lost Empire. He lives in Arizona.

More About the Author

Clive Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt(R), in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.
Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.
In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization.
In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.
Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. His past international bestsellers include Pacific Vortex, Mediterranean Caper, Iceberg, Raise the Titanic, Vixen 03, Night Probe, Deep Six, Cyclops, Treasure, Dragon, Sahara, Inca Gold, Shock Wave, Flood Tide, Atlantis Found, Valhalla Rising, Trojan Odyssey, Black Wind, Treasure of Kahn and Arctic Drift (the last three with his son, Dirk Cussler) as well as The Chase; the nonfiction books The Sea Hunters, The Sea Hunters II and Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (R) Revealed; the NUMA(R) Files novels Serpent, Blue Gold, Fire Ice, White Death, Lost City, Polar Shift, The Navigator and Medusa (written with Paul Kemprecos); and the Oregon Files novels Sacred Stone and Golden Buddha (written with Craig Dirgo) and Dark Watch, Skeleton Coast, Plague Ship and Corsair (written with Jack Du Brul).
Clive Cussler lives in Arizona.

First off let me state that my book doesn't appear to have any binding problems. I have been sitting and going through for several days now and not a problem with the binding. So, while I know another reviewer had problems my copy doesn't appear to have any issues.

The pictures are really well done, the paper quality is good and there is lots to look at. You don't just get one small picture of each car but you often get multiple pictures showing the exterior, the interior and anything of special interest, such as specialty hub caps. The detail is great and I couldn't be happier with the quality.

The description of each car is good yet not overly technical. I enjoy the way each description is written and don't think that I will grow bored over looking through this book in the days, months and years to come.

The bonus feature is knowing the background story of the novels that Dirk Pitt appears in while driving one of these cars, or maybe even our good Van Dorn Detective Isaac Bell.

I was a bit taken back by the cost, but then realized that this is a coffee table book and would have lots of color pictures that are not cheap to print and reproduce.

After receiving my copy, I'm pleased with the quality and with the price. I will enjoy this book for many years to come and think if you are a Clive Cussler fan and enjoy cars that you will also enjoy this book.

I wanted to wait and hopefully receive this from my wife for Christmas, but once I picked it up at the bookstore I couldn't put it down. Should have ordered it from Amazon though. The photographs and scenery are fantastic! Not to mention the cars themselves. I would recommend this to anyone that is NOT a car buff. Even my wife Marge loved it. She actually enjoyed reading the stories about the cars, because it was not all technical. The fun part is reading how Cussler acquired the cars. Not a big fiction reader, so I didn't know he used some of the cars in his stories. Guess now I'll have to order one of his novels. We plan to order "Built for Adventure" for my son for Xmas. He can't have mine!

Unlike many car books, this one is a great read. Not overly technical, each car comes with a well written bit of history. Of course the fact that Dirk Pitt drove many of them brings a whole other level of interest.

"Built for Adventure" is one of those "coffee table" books true readers so often eschew as below them. In this case, they would be missing out if they jumped to that conclusion. The redeeming virtue here is Mr. Cussler's clear connection to his subject and his anecdotal tales of purchases and finds along the way. If you are looking for a history or something closer to the Ken Purdy classics of the past, this isn't the book for you. These cars and the marques they represent deserve a far more comprehensive textual treatment than they receive here. Nonetheless, the selections are as eclectic as the man who collected them, and there is something endearing about that, especially for those of us who have followed the adventures of Dirk Pitt for many years. As Cussler's readers will know, many of these cars figure prominently in past novels, and for those of us who are fans, the connection is palpable. In the end, the beautiful photography, eclectic selection, and the connection to the Cussler canon go someways to distinguish this from other works of its ilk and make it worthwhile for the Cussler fan.

Mr. Cussler's collection of pre-war automobiles is in a word:fantastic. I should not covet, but I have to admit to salivating over many of the beautiful cars highlighted in this book. Never having read any of his books, I know nothing of his literary style. The prose in the book is none too stellar, however. I am not sure that is his fault. Another book I have read like this one, also printed in China, had prose that would have barely scored a passing grade in a rudimentary high school English class. One would be tempted to blame the final typesetting in China for some of the glaring mistakes and poor grammatical style. It would seem as if the American editors did not do such a grand job of double checking the final product. The photos are magnificent. Mr. Cussler loves his cars. He also appears to have very deep pockets and spares little expense in renovating his purchases. For those who may be tired of all of the hype and hoopla surrounding 60s muscle cars and European exotics, this book would be a worthwhile addition to your library. Thank goodness there are people like Mr. Cussler who make it a point to preserve these beautiful machines.

This book is beautifully done, The pictures are clear and detailed. It covers about 1/2 of Clive Cussler's collection and encompasses 58 vehicles. I hope it has a sequel, I must admit there are a few photographs I wish had been in there. But for a "Coffee Table Book" What's there is fabulous. It makes me want to become a successful writer, just so I can have a really nice collection of Antique Cars.

Fans of classic cars and Clive Cussler will love this book. It features many beautiful, colored photographs of classic cars owned by author Clive Cussler. A succinct history and description of each car is also contained in the book. This book was a gift for a car-loving Clive Cussler fan who is typically difficult to buy for. He loved the book!
