More About the Author
Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.
In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization.
In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.
Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. His past international bestsellers include Pacific Vortex, Mediterranean Caper, Iceberg, Raise the Titanic, Vixen 03, Night Probe, Deep Six, Cyclops, Treasure, Dragon, Sahara, Inca Gold, Shock Wave, Flood Tide, Atlantis Found, Valhalla Rising, Trojan Odyssey, Black Wind, Treasure of Kahn and Arctic Drift (the last three with his son, Dirk Cussler) as well as The Chase; the nonfiction books The Sea Hunters, The Sea Hunters II and Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (R) Revealed; the NUMA(R) Files novels Serpent, Blue Gold, Fire Ice, White Death, Lost City, Polar Shift, The Navigator and Medusa (written with Paul Kemprecos); and the Oregon Files novels Sacred Stone and Golden Buddha (written with Craig Dirgo) and Dark Watch, Skeleton Coast, Plague Ship and Corsair (written with Jack Du Brul).
Clive Cussler lives in Arizona.

The pictures are really well done, the paper quality is good and there is lots to look at. You don't just get one small picture of each car but you often get multiple pictures showing the exterior, the interior and anything of special interest, such as specialty hub caps. The detail is great and I couldn't be happier with the quality.
The description of each car is good yet not overly technical. I enjoy the way each description is written and don't think that I will grow bored over looking through this book in the days, months and years to come.
The bonus feature is knowing the background story of the novels that Dirk Pitt appears in while driving one of these cars, or maybe even our good Van Dorn Detective Isaac Bell.
I was a bit taken back by the cost, but then realized that this is a coffee table book and would have lots of color pictures that are not cheap to print and reproduce.
After receiving my copy, I'm pleased with the quality and with the price. I will enjoy this book for many years to come and think if you are a Clive Cussler fan and enjoy cars that you will also enjoy this book.
For a genuine car nut like myself, this book was a venture into cars from the classic era. The fact that 13 of the 58 cars highlighted in the book are Indiana-built didn’t surprise me. These included Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg, Marmon and Stutz models. My choice of the best Indiana-built car is the 1932 V-12 Auburn boattail speedster that is also featured on the back of the Artic Drift dust cover.
Other American-made cars range from a 1906 Stanley Steamer touring car, a 1933 American Austin Bantam roadster, to a 1946 Ford coupe that is the cornerstone of his collection. European-built cars range from a 1921 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost touring car, a 1928 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A boattail speedster, to a 1948 Talbot-Lago Grande Sport coupe.
Author Clive Cussler does an outstanding job of documenting these classic cars from his collection. He presents a brief history of each auto producer, thoughts about what drew him to each car, and details about the features of each particular auto.
Cussler’s research and writing background yield a thorough look at these classic icons. The book’s production fits a classic theme with an outstanding layout and first class photography. The author’s love for automotive history and use of photographs draw you into this nonfiction story.
