And I thought Black and Decker units were bad...,

We had an old B&D spacesaver that bears a lot of resemblance to these Contoure models, but that is where the resemblance ends. Our beloved B&D died so we thought we'd spend the extra money on this unit. The B&D had a mechanism where the drip area above the basket was on springs and it pressed itself into the basket to eliminate steam escaping. This unit has nothing of the sort and we had a whole lot of steam escape which causes condensation all over the cabinets above and also on the unit itself, which pools and drips on things below. It seems like a cheap design. Also, after running a pot the hot plastic smell was very evident and it greatly effected the flavor of the coffee. I don't care for plastic-flavored coffee. Also, after about three uses the clock on our unit started messing up... LCD segments would stay on no mater what, some bright and some dim, making setting the clock or timer function impossible. I unplugged the unit for several minutes then reapplied power in an effort to "reboot" the system... it didn't work.
Oh, and I almost forgot... the carafe was nice, but getting all the coffee out is impossible. I actually had the whole carafe completely upside-down and shaking it. Then I looked inside and there was still a small amount of coffee in there! Even when cleaning, to get all the water out you need to wipe it out with a towel. Needless to say, we did not keep the unit for long. The seller was very nice and offered us a refund so all we had to do was ship it back. The seller told me he sold about 200 of these units in the last two months and has had no problems... I find that hard to believe! Buyer beware!

Not good,

This unit was purchased to replace our Black and Decker unit that finally quit working after 6 years of faithful service. I wish that I had bought another B&D unit. We are going to return the unit and get another B&D unit.

Under Counter Coffee Maker,

Brews a really hot pot of coffee and it stays hot for a long time. Mounted under my cabnit just fine came with pleanty of hardware to use for mounting. Only issues I had was trying to figure out how to remove the back section of the unit to attach to my cabnit. Once I finally got the back off everything went just fine. Instructions for removing the back of the unit was not all that clear, called the company and talked to a CSR and he gave me a sugestion on how to remove of the back that worked better than the instructions and all was well.

Live and learn,

I purchased this coffee maker to replace a failed B&D Space Saver (sound like a common scenario). I can only reiterate what's been said before. When it worked, it bellowed enough steam to kill my kitchen cabinets. I did find it a bit irritating that it was all but impossible to remove the last bit of coffee. My biggest complaint overall is that it finally died around month five. Caput. Since I had to remove it and place it on the counter surface months ago due to cabinet damage, I concluded that I really didn't need an under the counter maker. I did the research and ended up with a Cuisinart BD1200. VASTLY SUPERIOR! Better flavor, easier to clean - and no steam! I definitely won't be looking back.

Suitable for RV or Boat,

Bought and installed coffee maker two months ago. Installation was easy and quick.
Pros: Easy install. Water reservoir, coffee basket, and stainless steel carafe click (lock) into place securely. Coffee tastes fine. Cons: Excessive steaming while brewing and especially at the end of the brew cycle. This steam is very bad for the cabinet the unit is mounted under. While the coffee is quite hot immediately after brewing is completed it does not maintain its heat as time goes by - guess I miss a heating pad keeping the coffee hot for when I want to drink it. Carafe is insulated and cannot be reheated on a stove top to warm-up coffee later. To reheat coffee it must be put into a different container that can handle stove heat. I consider this unit more suitable for use in a recreation vehicle (RV) or perhaps a boat cabin cruiser. The components look like they would be stable and secure enough to handle the rocking and rolling. I would not purchase this unit again to use in my home. |
