Book Description

February 22, 2011
Nothing pulls together—or changes up—a great outfit better than a stylish coat or jacket. It is the one piece in your wardrobe that you turn to again and again. Now, with the help of Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy, even beginner sewers can make this fabulous wardrobe staple—using 3 patterns to customize 23 different outerwear options!

Maybe you already sew your own skirts, tops—or even dresses—yet the thought of taking on a coat or jacket still seems a bit daunting. In Built by Wendy Coats and Jackets, indie fashion designer Wendy Mullin puts those fears quickly to rest, with guidance and know-how that will give any level sewer the confidence needed to create the ultimate fashion essential.

Using three patterns for a fitted jacket, a basic jacket, and a straight coat, Wendy offers dozens of variations on these silhouettes so that you can step out in style in a statement-making bolero or a sophisticated, Chanel-like dinner jacket in boucle. Beginners can stick to the basic patterns, while Wendy helps more experienced sewers discover endless outerwear possibilities just by making slight pattern adjustments.

Full of easy-to-understand instructions and the secrets and shortcuts Wendy has learned as a designer and home sewer, this book’s creative projects and styling suggestions will show anyone just how simple creating a dream jacket can be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Video Review March 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Length: 7:03 Mins
If you make it to the end of this video, then I should give you a "helpful vote" ;)

In a nut shell:
1. I did not sew a project from this book.
2. The book is best suited for intermediate seamstresses. You will need to know seam allowances for cutting out patterns, using linings, fitting, sizing patterns, zippers, buttons etc.
3. The book comes with 3 basic patterns: Fitted Jacket, Basic Jacket & Straight Jacket. From these three patterns the author gives instructions for making 23 additional styles of jackets.

In my opinion, the book is lacking instructions (for my sewing ability) and is not very visually appealing. However, I do like the books spiral binding for easier use.

If you are a fan of the "Built by Wendy" series of books, then you will not be disappointed. But I do feel there are better ways to make a jacket/coat for your wardrobe. I would buy directly from a pattern company or check out the book "Sew Serendipity" by Whitt (starting on page 112).

*I received a copy of "Built by Wendy Coats & Jackets" from the publisher in return for my honest opinion & review.*

XOXO

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Usual Book for Avid Sewers February 28, 2011
By Tara
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the newest book in the VERY USEFUL Built by Wendy series. Wendy teaches you how not only to make the garments pictured in the book but how to adapt, adjust and create your own patterns. This book (and all in her series) will be great for anyone interested in really expanding their skills and getting a better understanding of garment construction. Wendy packs a TON of information into all of her books and it is written very clearly and is easy to understand with very thorough steps. These books are a must have for any dedicated sewists library.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Book will Make You WORK February 26, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just received this book in the mail - it does not contain full patterns for all the coats pictured, rather it has just three basic sloper type patterns, with no seam allowances, that she tells you to first copy, adjust, and then add seam allowances to. So if you are hoping to dive in quick - forget it. There is alot of pattern prep work before you even think about cutting out fabric.

This book appears to have lots of great information for someone who wants to invest the time and work of creating custom sewing patterns for themselves, but is not the book for someone looking for a quick, satisfying sewing project.
