Mother of eating disorder teen,
This review is from: Bulimia/Anorexia: The Binge/Purge Cycle and Self-Starvation (Hardcover)
I am in a group for parents of children with eating disorders. We have all read several books on eating disorders. Dr. Whites book has become our new bible/workbook on eating
disorders. We were all amazed how knowledgeable she is on the very problems we face with our daughters. She is quite sensitive and non critical of our role as parents. Most books we have read are condescending towards parents. She shows us how we can all work together to overcome this problem, kudos and much thanks and gratitude to Dr. White! The absolute truth, for both psychologist and the client,
This review is from: Bulimia/Anorexia: The Binge-Purge Cycle and Self-Starvation (Paperback)
I was hesitant to read something like this. I am a 20 year old girl, studying to become a psychologist, who has been suffering from a diagnosed "eating disorder NOS" (not yet specified), with both anorexic and bulimic tendencies (but mostly concentrated on the bulimic).
I thought that I had a good understand of what this was all about. It was control, it was partly about self esteem, it was a promise of how everything in my life would be fixed if only I was thin enough. So all in all I didn't expect this to provide me much insight. I was wrong. It made me realize exactly how similar girls like me are, both on our personalities and upbringing. It made me see connections I maybe vaguely knew but never fully understood, and details I had missed. The fact that there is such a striking set of differences between the personality of a bulimic girl (usually social, perfectionist) and an anorexic girl (more withdrawn, does it in secret) was fascinating. I could easily identify myself in the chapters and found myself saying "yes YES that's EXACTLY IT!" I am re-reading it now, at least a year after the first time. I am in a different place now, almost recovered I would say, and I'd love to refresh my memory just to see what my reaction will be now. I recommend this to anyone, psychologist, or someone who is suffering themselves.

Fantastic, a must read,
This review is from: Bulimia/Anorexia: The Binge-Purge Cycle and Self-Starvation (Paperback)
I am an adolescent psychotherapist, and this is by far the best book I have ever come across in the entire field of eating disorders. I have recommended this book to countless clients and parents struggling with eating disorders. They have said it is an easy read, and incredibly helpful! In fact, it is the only book I have come across that gives specific strategies for therapists to employ with their clients. I hope this author continues to write in this field. She is brilliant and compassionate!
Please keep this on the shelves, and kindle! Becky Singer L.C.S.W, CAP |
