Biography

The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin which existed 1965-1969. During their career, the band released four LPs and seven 45s for the International Artists record label.

The 13th Floor Elevators found some commercial and artistic success in 1966-67, before dissolving amid legal troubles and drug use in late 1968. As one of the first psychedelic bands, their contemporary… Read more in Amazon's 13th Floor Elevators Store

This review is from: Bull of the Woods (Audio CD)
If you're trying to figure out which Bull of the Woods out of the many editions of the 13th Floor Elevators CDs to choose from, THIS ONE has the BEST sound of them all. The U.S. Collectables lable sounds excrebal, and the UK Charly release is little better. This one *still* doesn't sound as good as the versions trading in fan circles, which are either remixed needle-drops of original mint vinyl from 1968 or taken from 8-track tapes just two generations away from the masters, but it sounds a WHOLE lot better than anything else out there from the U.S. or the U.K.

The material speaks for itself. While it's true that this doesn't have the cohesion that "Easter Everywhere" does, there are some good reasons: the Elevators were descending when this LP was made, Roky was in Rusk State Mental Hospital, and so it consists of outtakes from the Easter Everywhere LP (with only 2 or 3 cuts with Roky Erikson) and the rest being outtakes from an unrealized project to be titled "Beauty and the Beast." It *still* beats just about anything that was happening in Frisco those days, except maybe for Skip Spence.
