Entries are arranged alphabetically and cover books, films, and plays, as well as characters and "significant places, hotels, restaurants, landmarks, gadgets, techniques, expressions, and systems." There are entries for historical individuals such as Ronald Colman, who received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of our hero in a 1929 film, and Gerard Fairlie, the writer who continued the series after McNeile's death. Certain entries, such as Foods of the 1920s and 30s, provide a snapshot of Bulldog's cultural context; others, such as Golf and Orient Express, describe how various real-life phenomena figure in the books. The fact that "the fictional entries are written as if the information were all true" helps make for lively reading. Most entries are very brief, with bold type used for terms that are themselves entry headings. Among the several appendixes are a script for a BBC radio program that aired in 1936 and featured a chat between McNeile and Fairlie, charts of characters and settings, complete bibliographies of works by McNeile and Fairlie, and a list of sources. This specialized encyclopedia is recommended for comprehensive collections. RBB
