Book Description

February 2001
Between the two world wars, a demobilized British ex-officer became the most beloved fictional character since Sherlock Holmes. Captain Hugh Drummond-better known as "Bulldog"-was the hero of seventeen novels and more than twenty films, stage plays, and BBC radio programs. The series was popular enough, in fact, to outlive the original author, Herman Cyril McNeile ("Sapper"), and to withstand the interruption occasioned by the Second World War before finally disappearing from the public eye in the 1950s, with the introduction of the James Bond character. The books are now out of print and only a few videos of the films can be found. This volume contains complete descriptions and detailed information on the characters and the world of Bulldog Drummond, a world rife with Bolsheviks, terrorists, spies, saboteurs, Packards, English Channel packets, Rolls-Royces, castles, mastiffs, and tarantulas. Information is replete on Sapper, Gerard Fairlie (the second author), and the several actors who starred as the legendary hero.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Following World War I, demobilized British officer Captain Hugh Drummond (aka "Bulldog"), "finding peace incredibly tedious," offered his services as an independent operator, prowling the world of spies, terrorists, and other criminal elements. Created by Herman Cyril McNeile, Bulldog's adventures were chronicled in 17 novels and more than 20 films, stage plays, and radio programs, until being eclipsed in the 1960s by the more sophisticated James Bond. Today, the books are out of print, and only a few of the films are available on video. This encyclopedia may help resurrect Bulldog for modern readers.

Entries are arranged alphabetically and cover books, films, and plays, as well as characters and "significant places, hotels, restaurants, landmarks, gadgets, techniques, expressions, and systems." There are entries for historical individuals such as Ronald Colman, who received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of our hero in a 1929 film, and Gerard Fairlie, the writer who continued the series after McNeile's death. Certain entries, such as Foods of the 1920s and 30s, provide a snapshot of Bulldog's cultural context; others, such as Golf and Orient Express, describe how various real-life phenomena figure in the books. The fact that "the fictional entries are written as if the information were all true" helps make for lively reading. Most entries are very brief, with bold type used for terms that are themselves entry headings. Among the several appendixes are a script for a BBC radio program that aired in 1936 and featured a chat between McNeile and Fairlie, charts of characters and settings, complete bibliographies of works by McNeile and Fairlie, and a list of sources. This specialized encyclopedia is recommended for comprehensive collections. RBB
