About the Author
When we first meet someone, we tend to see just one side of the individual, as they are at that moment, forgetting that it took a lifetime of complex experiences to create and mold the person.
Saul was born at home, the youngest of 4 children, Claire, Bernie, Sy and a fifth baby brother, Al arriving 11 years later. Mom Jennie, and Pop Morris were born in Europe and raised their children traditionally. The Depression of the 30s required everyone in the family go to work regardless of age. Saul, at age 9, sold onions from a push cart. He also delivered newspapers, circulars, sold ice cream and worked for an uncle who was a house painter. Cousin Eddie, who was raised with the family until college age, had affiliations with the Yiddish Theater, with Off-Broadway shows, quite popular at the time in New York. This opened the door for Saul who did theater, radio, and some child modeling until age 13. Sandwiched in between, were religious school and music lessons for clarinet and the saxophone. The music allowed for playing at weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and in the Borsht Belt in the mountains.
Money was still tight when Saul told his father that he wanted to become an eye doctor. Pop said, thats nice. This meant going to High School and professional college at night and working full time in the day time, six days a week in a fur manufacturing shop to earn money. At age 20 Saul met his beautiful bride of over 50 years, Edythe. World War II took Saul into military service after he had graduated from Optometric College. When the war was over, Edythe and Saul settled in Denver, Colorado, where the family was raised; Sandra (grandson, Derek and husband Bill), Barry (grandson, Jordan) and Mike (grandchildren, Amee, Adam, Cassie, Holly and wife, Chris).
