Refreshing blend of acoustic rock and hip hop,
This review is from: Bullet (Audio CD)
I first heard of Mat Kearney early in 2005 after I heard "Undeniable" on the radio. At first, the song didn't blow me away, but I liked it and I was interested in checking out this new artist some more. What I found was an outstanding debut album, with a perfect blend of acoustic guitars, driving beats, the occasional piano, tasteful rapping, and thoughtful lyrics. Many of the obvious comparisons can be made about him as well, as sometimes he can remind you of Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, or Paul Wright.
Trainwreck - 9/10 - A hard, driving beat with lyrics that set the tone for the rest of the album, with Kearney confessing that he is a "trainwreck for you." Undeniable - 9/10 - The first single, took me awhile to appreciate how good it was. It would be standard CCM were it not for the rapping in the verses. Bullet - 10/10 - My favorite from the album. I love the guitar and drum beat. Great lyrics and a powerful message in the chorus. "I would take a bullet for you...I would lose it all and take my fall to show you it's for real." Girl America - 7/10 - A good track but it doesn't really stand out among the rest. A song that reminds me of Paul Wright's style. In The Middle - 9/10 - Some of his vocals here really make him sound like Chris Martin of Coldplay. Just another great track. Renaissance - 10/10 - Powerful song about losing it all and asking for forgiveness, a second chance, and a way to heal a broken heart. Great, comforting chorus. Call Me - 9/10 - Comparisons to Coldplay can mount here. A nice, mellow acoustic track. Poor Boy - 9/10 - Great beat, wish more hip-hop would sound like this. Walking Away - 9/10 - Once again, Mat shows an ability to craft guitar riffs beautifully to complement his rapping/singing. Tomorrow - 8/10 - Another great track, piano based beat, very cool sounding. Won't Back Down - 9/10 - An end album piano ballad. I just love the chorus and the feel of the song about not giving in and backing down no matter all of the chaos in your life. Some of the best Christian music that has come out recently, it's a shame that he won't get any mainstream recognition, but there really isn't a market for am artist like him anyway. Mat's strongest points are his guitar/piano riffs, vocal/rapping style, and his thoughtful and relatable lyrics. I look forward to more music from him in the future.

Inspired Originality,

Mat Kearney's "Bullet" exploded on to the scene in a way that no one imagined. Taking a blend of contemporary pop, adult alternative, hip hop, acoustic rock and even some "emo," Kearney's release definately has something for everyone. Not only is that "something" great... it's originality is simply undeniable. There is just nothing like it out there right now.
Musically, Mat Kearney has fused some of the best qualities of the musical scene. His catchy beats, his addictive voice, the melodic ensemble, the poetic lyrics... it all just works; and how. Kearney's original musical blend is sure to have you wrapped up for the entire duration of the album, however many times you listen to it. His vocals do, at times, resemble that of Coldplay's lead vocalist (ocasionally, the music does too) and, at other times, Everlast's. However, as the music is varied, so his voice morphs with it too. If you're looking for an album with outstanding music and great vocals that can adjust to nearly every taste in music, this is the album you are looking for.

Well I first purchased this cd back in March because of the song "Undeniable". My 4 year old at the time absolutely would go nuts every time we heard it on Christian radio. We would drive down the street to school with a brush and pen in our hands pretending to sing in a microphone all the while he is singing "your the only one...." on the top of his lungs.
Cd came home at first I really was not feeling the vibe of it since it is no way close to music I would normally listen to, but for my sons sake it was played over and over again for about 2 weeks until I absolutely feel in love with it. This album has an urban hip hop/acoustic/pop and spoken word type feel to it. Truly an album that sits you in front of Gods thrown in a way that cannot be explained. The lyrics touch the deepest part of the listener. Truth as it unfolds in a story surrounded by all types of sounds and beats that at times makes you want to dance and at others just sit down and let in all sink in. Favorite Songs: Bullet Walking Away Won't Back Down In the Middle Really every song on this cd is loved, hard to even say what my favorites are. If you are contemplating buying this cd and would like to hear the whole cd in 45second to 1 minute clips (more than Amazon lets you hear) [...] SUPPORT CHRISTIAN MUSIC AND GET THIS CD!!! YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED!!

Bullet Hits The Mark,
This review is from: Bullet (Audio CD)
Well Mat is in a league that few have dared to enter. He definitely has a uniqueness about him that very few can even claim. There's a hint of a number of bands that his music sounds a little like. Those bands would be the likes of Trick Turner, a hint of Johnny Cash, a hint of Dave Matthew's Band, and even made me think of Everlast with the guitar work and the voice too. I am not disappointed. I even checked the demo out on a whim and was blown away by the artistry. You can't go wrong if you like the sound of acoustic guitar melded with the hip hop beat and feel. But don't think this is all hip hop. Mat takes you down the road with some piano too and some strictly singing songs. So there's a bit for everyone here.

I am not a Christian. I generaly am completely unimpressed by Christian music. I must say that this album is a very rare exception. Mat Kearney has released an absolutely stagging work. If you like Coldplay or Keane - this music is for you. I highly recommend it!

A true artist.,

Mat Kearney never ceases to amaze me.
This is an incredible album. Kearney's songs contain a passion not found on most CDs. Lyrically, he is amazing. He is positive without being preachy; subtle without being obscure; passionate without being cliche. Every time I hear one of his songs a new layer of meaning strikes me. Stylistically as well, Kearney has no equal. He composes an altogether unique, beautiful, and often stunning combination of the emotion of melodic rock and the intensity of the spoken word. He easily shifts back and forth from intense spoken voice to clean vocals and has a truly beautiful falsetto. There is no weak track on this CD. Each song can both stand on its own and can fit together with the entire album to build up into a real masterpiece.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, so is Mat Kearney's "Bullet" emerging from a sea of so many unremarkable new acts/new music. In a time where so much of the newest music is homogenized and lacking in edge, "Bullet" successfully marries hip-hop to acoustic. When you listen you will not only be blown away by the uniqueness of his sound, but the powerful messages. Mat is breaking the mold. He sings, raps, plays and writes. May he have phenomenal success and be greatly rewarded for choosing to take risks and be honest with his music.

Mat Kearney immediately draws comparisons to other mainstream artists - which is not to say he is unoriginal in the least. But he has taken the best of what's hot and made it his own. You will not hear another artist who sounds so exactly like Chris Martin from Coldplay - especially on "In The Middle." I also found myself recalling Citizen King's "Better Days" and Shawn Mullins "Lullaby." The point is, this CD easily keeps pace with any mainstream release, yet with an emotional punch that resonates from a Christian worldview.

A Must for any Music Lover!!!,
By
This review is from: Bullet (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after having seen it on shelves and advertised, but never having actually listened to any tracks. Something about the look of the guy on the cover (Mat himself) intrigued me. I didn't know what to expect. I have never been so surprised and pleased!!! From the very first song I was hooked. This guy blends rap, soul, rock, pop vocals all seemlessly into a magical melodic mix of music. Not only is he gifted as a lyricist in terms of his ability to "rap" (no, not the hip hop rap you're thinking of), but his singing voice is amazing and in a couple of songs reminds me a lot of Dave Matthews. Anyway, buy this album now so you can be the one who introduces all your friends to one of the best albums this year!
