Editorial Reviews

Michael Landau, Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Gary Novak have achieved status as masters of their craft. Bullet is their 2nd collaboration.
Bullet is a guitar tour de force riding on the fierce rhythmic foundation of bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Gary Novak.
Delivering a set of rootsy blues rock crossed with hypnotic vocal tunes, the band draws on the unique guitar interplay between guitar giants Robben Ford and Michael Landau who inspire each other to new personal bests.

Bought this because I like Robben Ford's style but the Michael Landau penned songs really shine on this disc. Robben Ford is strong here as always and the song "People Like Me" was my favorite. I'd ding the CD for half a star due to the cover of Dylan's "Too Much of Nothing", because no one can top the original Dylan/The Band version. All the Michael Landau tunes are excellent and it is hard to pick a standout. The rhythm section is also top notch. Hard to be disappointed with this CD.

I would have reviewed this at 4 1/2 stars but it would be churlish to round down my score instead of up for such wonderful musicians - each and every one of them. The rhythm section of Novak and Haslip are almost the stars here, so tight and propulsive, and not afraid to stamp their authority on the recording. Robben Ford's singing is as soulful, confident and relaxed as I've heard him. He's never been a naturally gifted singer in my book, letting his guitar evoke an extensive range of emotion instead, however listening to his vocals on some of the tracks here suggests that he is very comfortable as frontman to the band, and has become an accomplished singer in his own right.

Michael Landau is less experimental in his guitar work than when I saw the band live in Sydney a year ago. The quality of his playing however, and Ford's playing, is first rate, and even where the album loses momentum with the slow numbers like Nazareth, there is always impeccable playing.

There is an interesting juxtaposition of hard rock and Allmanesque middle of the roaders like "people like me" which suggests that the band are very relaxed about mixing up genres. I am of the view that the harder stuff like the title track better represents the energy this band fulfills live, but I don't mean in any way to denigrate the soulful blues on this album because Ford has made his reputation on the back of such subtle musicianship.

Recommended without hesitation, especially for those that loved the first album.

Yeah Robben Ford is one of the greatest blues players that not simply mastered the art of blues playing but has an undeniable style of his own that can be recognized in just a single note. Jimmy Haslip obviously dear to RF's heart and everyone who appreciates his incredible talents as a bass player that can design such quality pockets with drummers of all genres. Gary Novak who also occupies one of the coveted chairs as an in demand drummer such as Vinnie Colaiuta,Simon Phillips,Steve Gadd etc, melds together with Haslip to create a tight and intricate rhythm section. But what astonishes me is the influence that Michael Landau has on these three giants of all styles. Seems like in their spare time, any number of todays virtuosos like Jimmy Herring...Scott Henderson....Greg Howe.....Rod Morganstien.....Steve Smith.....Omar Hakim.......T Lavitz......Jimmy Johnson.......Victor Wooten (get my drift) . These guys put out jazz-rock-funk-fusion cds that wow each other. But this is not one of those projects. Landau, whose name pops up everywhere for those of us who are interested in the studio players, along with Ford, Haslip and Novak have created a song driven piece of music that is so fresh and unique, compared to what I expected when players of this stature put something together. Landau seems to be one of those guys who doesn't possess the need to blow you away with incredible chops, although he has them. We all know players like this. Being from St. Louis,Mo. I was fortunate to often see a local guitarist by the name of Peter Mayer of the group PM. He is a blistering player. One of which I wish he'd just make one cd of smokin hot guitar work but appears to be beyond that. Peter like Landau lets his creativity take center stage in his presentation of the music. Nothing against chops now.Read more ›

Ford & Landau, how can you go wrong? Great support from bassist Jimmy Haslip, & drummer Gary Novak, not to mention the great talents of engineering and production legend Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan)
