Book Description

September 28, 2007
Everyone’s going to die; the only question is, how? Soldiers refer to this certainty as “a bullet with your name on it.” For each person, though, there can be many bullets — and by knowing where to look, and what actions to take, readers may be able to dodge most of them. Consumers looking for reliable medical advice face a barrage of uncertain, often contradictory, and occasionally deadly misinformation, with as many prescriptions for better living as there are lobbying groups and pharmaceutical companies. Avery Hurt sifts through the chaff of current medical hype to focus on the key health issues that everyone faces. She simplifies the current research on risk factors for heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other conditions so that readers can make meaningful decisions based on their own situations and lifestyles. Through her by-the-numbers approach, readers can adopt preventative steps that lessen their odds for contracting terminal illnesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at the things that can kill us!, December 3, 2007

This review is from: Bullet with Your Name on It: What You'll Probably Die From and What You Can Do About It (Paperback)
I learned a lot from this book about the things that end up killing most people, and how to avoid as many of them as possible. I was especially interested in the sections on diabetes and cancer, as both run in my family. The book made me think about some of my habits, and I've already changed a few. I'd recommend this title to anyone who is interested in staying healthy as long as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Helpful, Accesible, December 27, 2007

This review is from: Bullet with Your Name on It: What You'll Probably Die From and What You Can Do About It (Paperback)
This book puts forth up-to-the-minute, well-researched scientific information on common diseases and conditions and ways to prevent them, and somehow it's easy to read, funny, and fascinating. The author focuses on a thorough sumnation of today's greatest threats to our health and gives straightforward, user-friendly ways to take preventive action. I found most interesting and encouraging the many suggestions for changing health habits. Rather than imparting long, confusing, and complicated ideas for dieting, excercise, and other health considerations, Ms. Hurt gives down-to-Earth, practical, and (most important) do-able advice on leading a healthier life. Many of her ideas even bring fun and creativity to being healthy--an undertaking that we all know can be a drag. I began immediately to design my own health plan using most of Ms. Hurt's suggestions, and my husband has been inspired as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book could increase your life span by years!, December 23, 2007
By
This review is from: Bullet with Your Name on It: What You'll Probably Die From and What You Can Do About It (Paperback)
Ever wonder if there was a way to live a longer, healthier life? Turns out, there is! And Avery Hurt's book does a great job of explaining how to beat the odds, and possibly add years to your life span. And healthy years at that!

Written in a very readable style, without intimidating statistics or complicated science, Hurt mixes wit and humor to explain why we get so much conflicting and confusing information from well-known medical studies. We've all heard them on the evening news, or read them in the popular press. Should I drink that morning cup of coffee, or not? Should I have a glass of wine (or two) with dinner, or not?

One-by-one, Hurt examines the major health threats we all fear: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many others. Then, Hurt provides the tools we need to examine our own family medical histories (heredity), lifestyle choices, and even our environnment, so we can begin to make immediate choices that improve our odds of living a longer, healthier life. I highly recommend this book!
