1.0 out of 5 stars For Christians Only
As another reviewer noted this book is written by a Christian for other Christians. Had I bothered to read the previous reviews I would have known this fact. I have friends who have read this book and enjoyed it, but they are Christians and I am not - so obviously there are a lot of things in this book that does not apply/work for us non-Christians (unless you are...

5.0 out of 5 stars Living without fear, May 20, 2005
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
For years fear has tormented me. There are many experiences in my life that have contributed to this, but after becoming a Christian I wanted to totally free myself from this mindset. Chuck Holton's Book, Bulletproof, has greatly helped me to realize that we are able to live a fearless life under Divine protection, and guidance. I was especially touched by his chapter dealing with "bulletproof" children. He helped me understand about parental peace of mind, while also embracing responsible parenting. This book is a blessing to anyone struggling with fear issues. After finishing this book I have a renewed confidence, and for the first time in a long time am excited about living fear-free. Thank you, Mr. Holton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing, September 17, 2008
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
This book is absolutely indispensable for Christian men in a battle setting. Any fears you may have had will dissolve quickly when you apply the knowledge and insight given in Mr. Holton's book. I do high risk security and go "hands on" within the context of low socioeconomic multi-family housing situations, and I often go against a superior force. Anything can happen, up to and including murder. The stress can destroy a man, but resting on the infallibility of God's word, Mr. Holton presents a clear, concise, first-hand account of the success and applicability of God's wisdom. Lest we not forget, God, too is a warrior.

I really enjoyed the book. A great message that combines real life stories, with sound theology and scripture. A quick read that is relevant to today's Christian.

I have friends who have read this book and enjoyed it, but they are Christians and I am not - so obviously there are a lot of things in this book that does not apply/work for us non-Christians (unless you are searching for faith, then maybe this book could help? I don't know...)
If you're a practicing Christian in the LE/MIL field I'm sure this book can be of great value, but for the rest of us I'm afraid it does not offer much.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not scared!, June 19, 2005
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
I was never one to focus on fear or worry, in fact I was always confident that God was always taking care of me in His own way. Chuck's book really shined new light on how not to fear ANYTHING and trust in God, and only God.

As a father of two small boys, concern for broken limbs (or worse) is always haunting! Chuck's book made me realize that God saved me from myself when I was small, so why should I fear that He won't take care of my boys...according to His plans?

This is not only a great read for anyone dealing with fear, but all fathers (especially of boys) need to read this one. Thanks, Chuck.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! It was good., April 15, 2009
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
I'd actually been looking for training books on firearms and special forces. Somehow, I caught this one and ended up getting it. I had no idea it was a Christian/ spiritual book until I got it.

Fortunately, I'm actually into such things. So, I accepted it without complaint, laughed at my mistake, read it and liked it. It's a nice spin on spirituality that cops and military should appreciate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bullet proof should have been called Bullet Resistant, April 13, 2011

The book promises a lot. But the title is very misleading. What the book should have been called is "Bullet Proof: The making of an Invincible Soul". The books is about finding and trusting in God instead of ones self which is great but not what I was looking for. I am very disappointed.

Loved this book, Chuck Holton is a great author and keeps the book moving with lots of life stories. An encouraging book for strengthening your walk with Christ, great for the young and old.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and misleading, December 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
I bought this book expecting expertise in mental conditioning from a former Ranger, and instead I got a Christian sermon which basically boils down to "have faith in god, and you will not have to be afraid anymore". I could perhaps care less, but when I found numerous references to being in god's army, fighting the spiritual war, and an advice for the reader to ponder on the difference between the death of a Christian and the death of an unbeliever, I realized that it is precisely this kind of dividing attitude and self-righteousness that fuels many present-day conflicts.

There are some gems, like some sensible advice about risk assessment of daily threats, and good idea to turn off the "reality" served to us by the media, but these excerpts are very brief and interspersed with quotations from Bible. It makes this book very hard to read for anyone but a devout Christian, and confounds two factors that are not necessarily related: faith and psychology.

All this unfortunately means that this book is shallow and misleading - the true psychological mechanisms of fear are obfuscated by presenting one and only way to deal with them - trading one illusion for another. Perhaps for some people it is an important step on their way, but personally I expected more, and I can't recommend this book to anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unreadable if you're not Christian, August 21, 2006
This review is from: Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind (Paperback)
For better or for worse, this book is not your standard personal growth tome. It is by a Christian, for Christians (only), and your enjoyment of it will vary accordingly.

Almost everything in this book premised on belief in Christ -- both in how Holton approaches fear and how he advises others to do so -- and if you don't accept Jesus as your savior, his advice and insights are completely useless.

If you're Christian (I'm not), you might find this aspect of it to be a net positive.
