5.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
What do make-up and espionage have in common? Nikki Lanier! I very much enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down. Finally, there's a female answer to James Bond. Not as suave, maybe, at least not in the beginning. :) Bethany Maines does a great job of weaving important issues into an entertaining format. Her characters stand out from the page and the story is just downright fun. I was very entertained by this debut book of Ms. Maines and look forward to the next installment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - great plot, characters, pacing. It was a light, easy read that made my plane ride go by quickly and caused the the person sitting next to me to think I was crazy because I kept laughing out loud.

Like others reviews have said, this book is a fun, escapist easy read. I really enjoyed the world of Carrie May and Nikki Lanier. I'm actually of thinking of getting a few extra copies to give as gifts to some of my girlfriends. I am definitely looking forward to book number two!

It is nice to read a book that has a strong female lead that can stand on her own. The characters are real and you can relate to them. The story line is fun and action packed and leaves you wanting to read more. I look forward to many more novels in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope for another installment!, July 7, 2010
This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
This was a fabulous read! I couldn't put it down. Witty and fun with the perfect amount of suspense and romance. I planned to read it on my week of summer vacation and I read it in two days. I kept telling my family I was in Bangkok because I was truely sucked into the details and life of the secret agents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A combination of Jason Bourne meets James Bond with a ponytail, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
I have to admit when I first picked up the book I looked at the cover and the idea of a woman spy and I was on the fence. But it didn't take long before I was drawn into the adventure. The book has a great mix of humor, suspense, and action. Nikki is a great character who is thrust head first into the action. I can't wait for the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want to be a Carrie May Recruit, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
Bulletproof Mascara was a great mix of drama, suspense and humor. This book drew me in with the adventures and twists of Nikki Lanier. Was Zev a good guy or was he a spy? Is Val really who she says she is? The combination of these intriguing questions and the humor of Nikki's character made it hard to put this book down. What an incredible adventure story with a female lead! I can't wait to read more about Nikki Lanier through the eyes of Ms. Maines.

I loved this book. I just ordered a backup copy to share with friends. I really hope more is on the way I could not wait to get to the end but was sad at the same time when I did because I had to say goodby to the characters until hopefully the next book comes out. I live in the Seattle area and althought I was not able to get to the book store to have my copy signed in person I was able to have the store reserve a copy and have it signed for me. I have it in a safe place because I know that this author is going somewhere. Think Janet Evanovitch with less sex but all of the fun. This nice because I have a young niece that is an advanced reater and there is nothing in this book that I would make it inapproprate for her. Nikki is smart she thinks things through but there is also some luck involved to get where she needs to go. I love that the women work together as a team each having their own strengths to share with each other. I also like the mixed age and background of the group. I really cant wait for the next installment

5.0 out of 5 stars Where do I sign up?, August 8, 2010

This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
As an adventure loving girlie girl, this book is the answer to the "What do you want to be when you grow up?" question. Where to start - humor, intrigue, action, guns, boys, chic clothes and make-up to boot? Could it get any better? Bulletproof Mascara was a fun and witty read from start to finish. Who knew that an undercover operative would still have to struggle with which shoes to wear? The characters are edgy, real and maybe a little (if not a lot) of the empowered and butt-kicking chick we all want to be! I'm a fan and a hopeful recruit - sign me up!!! Looking forward to the next one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bulletproof Mascara, May 9, 2010
This review is from: Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel (Paperback)
Nikki Lanier is in desperate need for a job, and her lone degree in linguistics is not helping her case any. When she gets an offer from Mrs. M, head of Carrie Mae Foundations (think Mary Kay or Avon) she gingerly agrees to learn about all things makeup. She quickly finds out that not only does Carrie Mae specialize in foundation and mascara, but they are also secret agents out to protect women around the world. Nikki soon finds herself attending target practice, learning which guns are used in which situations, and how to fight enemies with acid nail polish and flash grenade compacts.
After Nikki successfully completes her training test, Mrs. M sends her on to her first mission- to Taiwan. Nikki, along with veteran agent Valerie, are to rescue Lawan Chinnawat, director of a woman's clinic and a leader in protesting the sex trades that dominate Asia. Along the way, Nikki befriends a handsome stranger who she thinks may be a government agent in on the kidnapping, and learns of a traitor within the company, almost losing her own life because of it.
Bulletproof Mascara, the hilarious spy novel from Bethany Maines, will keep readers laughing throughout as innocent Nikki goes from her awkward unemployment stage to confident secret agent, figuring out missions. Nikki's character is immediately likeable, someone who is a little unsure about themselves but willing to take on a new challenge. The plot line is fun and engaging, with the mystery not being revealed until the very end. I was a little skeptical at first when I read the synopsis, because cosmetics gals working as secret agents didn't sound very believable, but Maines definitely makes it work. Bulletproof goes on my favorites list, and I cannot wait for the sequel to come out! The book even has its own website, [...], and there is plenty of fun to be found there. A must read for chick lit fans that enjoy a little mystery and suspense in their books.
