"Bullets and Brains" by Andrew Wilner, MD is a collection of essays about brains, what can go wrong with them, written for the people who try to fix them. Sadly, Brains are quite fragile, and tend to not recover the way, for example, a broken arm heals, or a broken heart softens over time. The reasons for the brain's fragility are complex, and Dr. Wilner's essays explore why.

The first essay describes the medical results of the attack on Congresswoman Giffords. By the end of the book, Dr. Wilner has explored the domain of her attacker's motives... of course, he doesn't do this directly (Doctors never address the "big" questions directly, they always respond with heaps of details), rather he has describes how Doctors try to understand such unfathomable acts, the tools they use to understand the brain. Specifically, Dr. Wilner discusses the diseases that attack the very fabric of our personalities. In reading the essays about Alzheimer's, Parkison's, Epilepsy, Stroke, even M.S., the reader can't help but think about what was wrong with the brains of the person who attacked Congresswoman Giffords.

The articles are engaging, fun to read. Tone-wise, if you enjoyed the TV show "House," or the early episodes of the TV Drama "E.R." you have more than enough background to read and enjoy these engaging essays. I chose the kindle version, but I imagine the paper version is better, as I much prefer to flip pages, not a touch screen.

One last thought, for anyone who is thinking about going to medical school, or is training as a physician and considering neurology... this book should be required reading.

What a wonderful book!!!
Written by a neurologist with superb writing skills and a vast knowledge...this is the kind of book that you cannot put down.

I especially loved the fact that i could just pick it up, look at the chapters and start reading wherever I wanted.

I hope that Dr. Wilner writes more, because I cannot wait for his next book, on whatever topic he chooses.

It is not often to find someone with the vast experience of Dr. Wilner, who also has the writing skills to keep the reader engrossed, even those with no medical training.

I highly recommend this book

Great book to dip in and out of, good for traveling.
Dr Wilner has a wealth of experience of all of neurology, has spent time in France, and also a background as a medical missionary.
Therefore somewhat unusually for a US trained doctor, much of what he says strikes a refreshing cord for a British physician.
This should be read not just by neurologists, but by anyone who is interested in a neurological perspective on the ills of modern society.
It will also be enjoyed by the educated lay reader.
