Book Description

"Dad told me once, that if people don't care about where they live, the way they act, people they associate with, they get lost in the dark, can't find their way back cause there's no light left. I had taken a pretty good step into the shadows tonight." It's payback time, in this short story by Joe R. Lansdale.

This is a kick-ass revenge story that provides you witih colorful characters and a lot of suspense and violence. The main character is very well drawn and you feel for him, are horrified by his actions while also rooting for him. I think Lansdale here has crafted one hell of an entertaining tale.

Okay, so maybe I'm in the minority here, but I thought this story was just okay. I did like the plot (the only thing that kept me going), but the writing style got to me a bit. I know that it's supposed to have that slang feel to it, but the amount of times the word "and" was used was overwhelming, and especially distracting throughout the climax. It was very rough to say the least, even the typos weren't as irritating as the choppiness of the writing style. Also, the end was on the edge of being drawn out too long for my taste. All in all, the plot made it worth the read, but I wish it were written smoother. All the author had to do was read it out loud to see it needed at least one more draft before publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A step into the shadows June 29, 2012

How far would you go for family and revenge? Lansdale tells us the story from the point of view of one young man - his thirst for revenge and the dark paths he has to take to achieve "closure."

Lansdale is one of my favorite authors and definitely a master raconteur. He has an ear for authentic, gritty, "down dirty" dialogue and there is no one better at character development in the least amount of words. I could picture each and every primary and secondary character in this novella and could practically smell the stench of the settings through my Kindle Fire. That is how realistic this (and every story of Lansdale's) is.

This is not a story for the weak of heart. There is a rankness to it that is compelling. You want to look away but you keep on reading to see where Lansdale is going to end up. And because it is so realistic, many readers won't want to read it. But if you enjoy "revenge" stories, this is one of the best.
