Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

SuEllen Fried, a dance therapist and community activist who has headed the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, and her daughter Paula, a psychotherapist, here collaborate on a thorough analysis of peer abuse among children. The book opens with a definition of bullying that examines when harmless teasing crosses the line to become abuse. Later chapters examine physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse among peers, with key ideas clarified by real-life examples. The final chapters suggest ways to empower children, including adult intervention and educational programs in school settings. Both broad and deep, this thoughtful overview of a common problem is recommended for public and academic libraries.?Kay L. Brodie, Chesapeake Coll., Wye Mills., Md.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book takes on school bullying with power and answers., September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bullies & Victims: Helping Your Children Through the Schoolyard Battlefield (Paperback)
Bullies & Victims is powerful testimony and documentation of how bullying in the school maims and damages both the victim and the bully. The all-too-frequent ability of one's peers to mete out cruelty and abuse is painful to read but necessary to face. The authors show how the long-term effects of these destructive conflicts have grave consequences for schools, families and society. But this fine book does not just describe the abuse and then simply wring its hands. The Frieds have practical and creative solutions and interventions which should galvanize schools, teachers, parents and everyone to action: a crash program to eliminate bullying from our schools so that our children are free of fear and free to flourish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bullies and Victims is invaluable to school counselors., September 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bullies & Victims: Helping Your Children Through the Schoolyard Battlefield (Paperback)
Bullies and Victims made crossing a playground more difficult. I now see the bullies and victims that had always been there. It is impossible to ignore them now. More importantly, Bullies and Victims has provided me with the tools to address this complicated problem. When I finished reading it I shared it with my family, administrators, teachers, and most importanly, other school counselors. Not only has it helped me better help my students, I realize that we all have a responsiblity as witnesses in our schools and in our communities to help our chilren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this for your school, November 9, 2000

This review is from: Bullies & Victims: Helping Your Children Through the Schoolyard Battlefield (Paperback)
This is a must-read for today's parents and educators. Buy one for yourself, and one as a donation to your school's resource library--that's what I did. This book helps us empower our children, awaken ourselves to the ongoing crisis on the playground, and break the cycle of abuse. Many victims become bullies...and many more children are silent witnesses to a secret code of intimidation that can lead to horrific violence over time. This book is an excellent tool to break the cycle. We owe it to our children to give them skills with which to break out of the typical victim/bully/witness trap. They will be better for it, and safer. Buy two now.
