4.0 out of 5 stars Learning Bullion Stitch, January 16, 2012

This review is from: Bullion Stitch Embroidery: From Roses to Wildflowers (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
There are so many ways to use bullion stitches it is hard to criticize someone else. This stitch looks easy but if you don't have the right thread and needles and easy stitch becomes hard. This book explains threads, needles, material and a lot more. Doing the bullion stitches looks beautiful but one wrong turn and you might as well cut the threads and start over. I would recommend this book, the only thing is I wish there was more color pictures showing threads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good teacher alas a lot of Australian Threads, December 10, 2011
This review is from: Bullion Stitch Embroidery: From Roses to Wildflowers (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
Jenny is a great teacher. This book and Textured Embroidery (Milner Craft)are companions. Jenny goes to great lengths in TE to tell you that all of the projects in it are new and not rehashes of BSE, it just carries a lot of Bullion Stitches on it as you can see from that title. It's a small book. the color photographs are poorly reproduced but the hand drawings are excellent. The downside to this book is that a lot of yarns she uses are Australian domestics i.e. Minnamurra Thread, Leah's Over-dyed, etc. which are rather cost prohibitive (mail wise) for us Yanks to get, or you can find threads cards so you have to do some color mapping. Sometimes she helps with the mapping, sometimes not. There are also a lot of different one-off yarns used her as well, so again there is more tracking for the right colour of Appleton Wool, the Kreinik Balger Cord, a particular braid,a Flower Thread here or there and so on. You either enjoy that, have it, or just like I do, fudge alot. But in teaching the stitches and how to lay out an exquisite piece like an embroidered thread painting, Jenny is a non-pareil.
