A 1968 Version by Lalo Schifrin - BUT NOT THE ORIGINAL ONE!!,
By
This review is from: Bullitt (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because I thought it was the original film version of the great soundtrack you hear in the movie. Instead of that the cd has ANOTHER version recorded in 1968 by Lalo Schifrin. It is a great recording (and I like it very much) but it has very little to do with what you hear in the movie. The main title (for example) is very different: it is faster and it does not have the same rhythmical nuances of the film version (in the movie, sometimes the music stops and we only hear the rhythm... and the rhythm keeps changing - it is great!). On this cd, the music seems re-written in a compacted version. If you did not see the movie or if you do not care for the original version, buy this cd - it is the best version available (since the true original film score is not available). But I loved the film version and cannot accept this one. That's why I got disappointed. Like "Psycho" and "Rear Window", "Bullitt" is one of those original soundtracks yet to be seen. I just hope someday someone will release it (like they did with "Blade Runner" years leter). Don't get me wrong: this cd is great but cannot match the real thing.

The Original and the Best,
By jartwo "jartwo" (Chattanooga, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bullitt (Complete Original Tracks) [Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
This is the one you've been waiting for - the COMPLETE, ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK to the Steve McQueen film! Outstanding sound quality "newly mixed from 1/2", 3-track tapes stored at the (Warner) studio"! Not only that, but the disc also includes the score album by Schifrin - newly mixed from the 1" master tapes. The album is actually presented on the first 12 tracks of this CD. This disc is loaded with great sounds and I have many favorites from both versions, but I think my overall favorite on this disc just may be the film version of the main title (though the one from the album is great, too). Fascinating to explore comparisons between the various album versions and their OST counterparts. I was knocked out by the sound quality - every pulsing bassline, the crystal clarity of every edge-struck cymbal and the brassy bite, as well as throaty growl, of every swingin' horn is on full display here and, of course, the heady, Jazzy atmosphere and dazzling-yet-subtle shifts in rhythm are infinitely satisfying as well. Limited to a run of 3000 copies. I wouldn't be surprised if this long-sought-after title sells out relatively quickly - don't miss out! An excellent companion to another Schifrin "acid Jazz" classic: the OST for Dirty Harry (Aleph).

Buy this version - it is the original,

This is the version of this soundtrack to get. The soundtrack has been re-recorded and released in 2000 on Aleph records with Lalo Schifrin. It is good, but does not kick the way this original does. The original soundtrack score was never released, this release is the jazzier version for record release from 1968. The reason Lalo re-recorded this work in 2000 was to offer both the film version and the record vesion all on one CD. So buy the 2000 release if you are a die hard. But start with this 1968 release.

Cool but is this considered the definitive edition,
By Jimbo Jones (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bullitt (Complete Original Tracks) [Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I received this cd in the mail today and am currently listening to album recording. I would think this to be the definitive edition of the soundtrack as it contains both the album and film ewcording(s). I shyed away from buying this as their have been a few releases of the Bullitt soundtrack over the years some 12 tracks others 18 but nothing definitive as none appear to the true 1968 score to the film.
The liner notes are extremely detailed and informative going in to detail about the novel Mute Witness (1963) and how it delveloped in the film itself. This cd is spread over 31 tracks 12 tracks are the album recording and tracks 13-30 being the film soundtrack and the last track is a demo. I will list the trackisting for both below the liner notes mention that this is the first US cd release of the re-recorded Bullitt souundtrack and the debut of the film soundtrack (anywhere) it also goes on the mention the 2000 recording with a German WDR big Band in Cologne and it also goes on to state that a rare vocal version of the main title theme the great divide was prepared but never recorded (intended for a party scene in the movie) but a single was released in Japan with Joanie Sommers it was not included here due to space limitations. I have already stated that in the notes this is the US debut of the 12 soundtrack album it does also note that Lalo re-recorded and re-arranged his score to present the music in a more dynamic and accessible light Album Recording 1.Bullitt (Main Theme) 2.Room 26 3.Hotel Daniels 4.The Aftermath of Love 5.Music to Interrogate by 6.On The Way to San Mateo 7.Ice Pick Mike 8.A Song for Cathy 9.Shifting Gears 10.Cantata for Combo 11.The First Snowfall (Paul Francis Webster & Sonny Burke) 12.Bullitt (End Title) So it appears this recording is also the same re-recording and re-arrangement as the other Bullitt releases with 12 tracks? This one runs approx 34 minutes Below is the tracklisting for the Film soundtrack and this has never appeared anywhere else until now 1.Main Title 2.Architect's Building 3.Cantana for Combo 4.A Song for Cathy 5.Hotel Daniels (Radio Source) 6.Room 26 (Radio Source) 7.The Aftermath of Love (Radio Source) 8.Dr. Willard 9.Ice Pick Mike 10.Quiet Morning 11.Music To Interrogate by 12.Just Coffee 13.Shifting Gears 14.On The Way To San Mateo 15.The First Snowfall (Webster & Burke) 16.Ross 17.Air Terminal-Main Lobby 18.End Credits 19.Bullitt (Demo) The Film Soundtrack runs approx 42:17 cd as a whole runs 79:34 I don't not regret my purchase as this is the only edition that currently has the music as heard in the movie itself. I hope one day a true definitive album version is released that isn't re-arranged or re-recorded. I wonder if Mr Schifrin has the original masters laying around somewhere? I still give this release 5 stars because I am a fan of Bullitt and Steve Mcqeen and Lalo Schifrin's work. This edition is limited to 3000 copies I believe this is a 2009 release.

32 minutes comes in a little short, but it is worth every last cent. Lalo is 'cool', his work is deeply layered and is very visual. A must for anyone who is in love with film.see also Deodato, Quincy and Herbie Hancock.

I bought this soundtrack for the cool music heard during the suspenseful parts of the film. After sorting it out, I've come to the conclusion that there are only three tracks listeners are really looking for. The three most identiful tracks are #1 Main Title, #7 Ice Pick Mike, and #9 Shifting Gears. These are the three that are the most recognizable. Don't get me wrong, it's worth the cost just to have these three, but the rest of the cd contains the jazzy riffs you hear throughout the movie. Which by themselves aren't necessarily bad, but it's the three I list that are the cream of the soundtrack, and what most people remember from the movie. So get the soundtrack if you love Bullitt, but just cue up those three tracks, you won't be sorry.

Cool enough,

Triggered by the title song I ordered this CD. Most of the songs are fine, some of them are even to cool to be true (Title Tune, Ice Pick Mike). Nevertheless, i suspect that some of the songs will get slightly boring after a while. Still, the ones that stand out will do so for a very long time

If you're a Bullitt fan you'll love this CD!,

The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because there were a few songs I didn't really care for. I have been trying to get a copy for a long time just for the cut "Song For Cathy", and the music leading up to the car chase, you'll hear the burning of rubber when it finishes! Great CD!
