If you only buy one book...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bullmastiff: Peerless Protector (Hardcover)
...this is the one to buy. As a first time Bullmastiff owner, I bought multiple books on the breed. This book gives a great historical review of the breed, what to expect, advice on care, training and breeding. It also includes show winners, pedigrees and notable kennels; therefore a great resource for anyone that is going to be involved with the breed. This book is thorough and detailed, and out of all the books I have read on Bullmastiffs, the best and most accurate one based on the day to day life with my Bullmastiff.

Incredible Book - Incredible Authors!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bullmastiff: Peerless Protector (Hardcover)
This book was one of the first ones about this breed that I purchased to do my research. My family has more than 20 years of experience in the world of dogs (showing, breeding, raising and training) but this breed was a new one for me -- and the book was very informative (in my opinion, a "must have" for any prospective Bullmastiff owner). After doing the research, I located the authors and purchased a dog from them. The authors were very personable and their knowledge of breeding for the 'betterment' of the breed is evidenced in their bloodline. I will be purchasing several copies of this book to give out to others down the road who may become part of my own breeding program in the years to come.

Too much about breeders and kennels,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bullmastiff: Peerless Protector (Hardcover)
This is basically a good book, but I found it a bit disappointing that so much of the book is made up of information about breeders that have bred bullmastiff over the years. The people who might be interested in that kind of information are likely to be bullmastiff breeders and experts already. I would have appreciated more information about the early days of the breed's history as a working dog, it's ancestor breeds and related breeds. I think that it would make sense to also discuss the bullmastiff in comparison to other breeds that a prospective buyer might consider. I expected a more thorough discussion regarding the past, present and future development of the breed. More colour pictures would also have been nice.

Definite show dog book,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bullmastiff: Peerless Protector (Hardcover)
I am awaiting my first bullmastiff pup and I was looking for advice primarily on care and training. In this book, although it did have some good information on care, very little had to do with trainng and day to day life with your bullie. There was extensive information on the development of the breed in Canada, U.S. and Europe which I wasn't particularly interested in. There was also a lot of good info on breeding, which I was also not interested in. If you are a potential "pet" owner, I do not recommend this book very highly

A great source,

This book is an excellent source of information on the bullmastiff. Through this book did I fall in love with the breed. It has valuable information on what to look for in a breeder as well as the health concerns for the breed. As a first time owner of a bullmastiff, this book allowed me to become more familiar with the background of the breed. There is more information on showing a bullmastiff then I wanted, but this book was especially helpful.

Excellent book for the novice and veteran bullmastiff owner,

As a lover and owner of the bullmastiff breed for over 15 years, this book was especially good. I found myself learning more about the breed and smiling at the personal stories about the breed througout the book. Once you own a bullmastiff there is no substitution for the breed and this book reflects the authors love of the breed. This book is excellent for both the novice and veteran bullmastiff owner. I highly recommend it.

Authors' actions speak louder than words,

I, like the reader's review before me, grew up in the dog show world with sporting breeds being my family's breed of choice. As I became an adult, able to decide on a breed of my own to raise and show, I developed an avid interest in the Bullmastiffs.
Through local channels, I was put in contact with the authors of this book who ultimately sold me the best dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning -- my Bullmastiff (who is six years old now). These authors have done all Bullmastiff fanciers a favor by putting their decades of knowledge about the breed in this book. It covers all aspects of the breed and answers many questions for both novice and expert fanciers. Having witnessed first-hand the lineage of their breeding program, I can attest to the fact that they practice what they preach. This book has become my "Bullmastiff Bible" throughout my endeavor to build upon a kennel of my own. Highly recommended reading for anyone considering the addition of a Bullmastiff to their family setting.

This is a great book for those considering a bullmastiff as a pet and for bullie owners. It portrays an honest and accurate overview of the breeds personality and how they fit in to family life.

A good introduction to the breed,

It's been a year now since our ten-year-old female bullmastiff passed away. I remember purchasing this book (and several others) not long after we got her; she was only a pup then.
"The Bullmastiff: Peerless Protector" is a good introduction to the breed, and I do recommend it if you are interested in bully breeds, or if you are thinking of getting a bullmastiff and know little about them. But it is not an owner's guide, so you'll have to look elsewhere for that. A few tips about the breed from a seasoned owner, not all of which are found in this book: 1. Bullmastiffs are indeed peerless protectors. With but one caveat (see next item) there is no other dog breed with their desire, instinct, and ability to guard home and family. The next best thing to a loaded gun in the house, and to my mind better in some ways (e.g., no need to worry about gun accidents). 2. If you are looking for a guard dog, in addition to a companion, however, you want a bullmastiff with intact working instincts. This isn't always true of show dogs, but there are breeders who specialize in working bullmastiffs. It might also be a good idea to check shelters and breed rescue organizations, for it's quite possible that a sheltered dog would have better working instincts than a pedigreed one. 3. These dogs make a welcome addition to most any family: very loving but at times delightfully, frustratingly stubborn. Training shouldn't be a problem (bullmastiffs are reasonably intelligent), just don't expect too much beyond the basics ('sit', 'stay', so forth). 4. Be prepared for a mess. In addition to the mess one can expect from any dog, even a fairly large one, bullmastiffs take things to another level. Particularly the slobber--they shake it off everywhere (you'll be amazed at the range) and it's not that easy to clean. In fine, if you're considering a bullmastiff, "Bullmastiff Peerless Protector," along with the little information I've given here, will at least help you make that decision. But once you decide a bullmastiff is right for you, you probably need something more, perhaps a good owner's guide. In memory of Chyna, b. 07/28/1998 d. 05/28/2009 |
