4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents and teachers, February 3, 2008

This review is from: The Bully: A Discussion And Activity Story (Paperback)
A lot has changed from when I was in grade school. The classrooms have become "smart", school lunches have gotten healthier, and class size and structure have been reworked. However, one thing that has NOT changed is the types of challenges kids face on a day-to-day basis when they are in school. One of the most challenging parts of school - from 20 years ago to the present-day - is that of bullies. Encountering a bully is still one of the toughest situations a child can face. As parents, caregivers, and teachers, we owe it to our children to make sure they know what to do and how to respond if they are bullied. The Bully: A Discussion and Activity Story is the perfect resource for both parents, teachers, and children.

The book has a unique format that facilitates teaching children how to cope with bullies. A short story sets the scene, a scene that is encountered all too frequently in grade schools across the country. Following, a question and answer segment gives the child insight on how a bully operates, verbalizes how a child feels when they are being bullied, and gives suggestions on what actions they could take when they are the subject of bullies.

Included is also a question and answer segment for parents, teachers, or caregivers that provides information on how to identify a bully problem, and gives helpful suggestions on how to deal with the situation in a manner that is both positive and understandable to the child.

One of the unique features of the book is that the illustrations, done by Jon Ljungberg, are meant to be used as coloring sheets. As the author correctly notes, although children may have a limited vocabulary when it comes to describing their emotions, they often express emotions well with color.

The Bully is an invaluable aid for parents, schools, community organizations and agencies working with children. Any parent with kids needs to get this book; not only for yourself, but for your kid's own well being.
