a return to powerpop heaven,
By tkent (Hythe, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bully (Audio CD)
After seemingly being buried by the hardcore revival at the end of the last decade, it seems the powerpop beast is finally set to return in the form of Sugarbomb. The band openly admit to being fans of powerpop legends 'Jellyfish' - and their influence is spread across the entire album. This coupled with influences from Imperial Drag, Queen, Wings - all mixed together with a liberal mix of early Faith No More and echoes of the current skate-punk scene. This version of the album is notable for including the track 'ordinary man'(arguably, the most Jellyfish influenced of their tracks), a song that originally featured on their fine indepedant debut album 'Tastes Like Sugar', now, unfortunately, fairly difficult to come by (pray for a reissue). The single 'Hello' has been a strong radio hit in the U.S.A. and is also featured on the soundtrack album to the film 'Orange County' - though those looking for it the track listing may not find it on some copies as it is featured as a 'hidden' track at the end of the album. The best piece of advice is buy this now, before everyone else, inevitably, get to them.

Sweet Aural Explosion,
By Bobzo (Nebraska,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bully (Audio CD)
"Bully", the debut album by the DFW based group, Sugarbomb, is possibly the best power-pop album I've ever heard. The song writing influences are easily recognizable but by no means plagiaristic. If you can imagine a mixture of the Beatles, Todd Rundgren, Queen, and the Moody Blues, to name a few legendary artists, then you have merely scratched the surface regarding what this band has produced. This version of the album included two bonus tracks, one of which was an acoustic version of the song "Hello", which was featured in the film "Van Wilder". Infectious, melodic, harmonic, sassy, and powerful pretty much sums up this album. It's an absolute must have for any serious power-pop fan's collection.
