Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

Very well built.
len
Just that, it's really well made, has a good amount of weight without being too heavy, and very effectively chops through the ice.
M
Once the ice was chopped, it melted away much more quickly.

This item is how ice chopper/scrapers should be made. One piece of steel from handle to blade.
It's more expensive (but worth it) than the cheap ones that have a life expectancy of a storm or two.
I keep the chopper blade in a bucket of sand that has a little vegetable oil mixed in with it.
This prevents the blade from rusting.

I bought this last winter because I had been out of town during some snowfall and returned to find an inch-thick layer of ice on my driveway and steps. A regular snow shovel didn't even make a dent in the ice.

This tool actually does the job. I lift it up about a foot, then just let it drop down onto the ice, and the weight does the rest. Some days it works better than others, but basically if I chop parallel to the edge about 5 inches in, then continue parallel, the ice comes off in little squares about 5 inches across and an inch thick. Sometimes it requires multiple hits, and sometimes the ice does not detach from the surface of the driveway, but in general it works slowly but steadily. I used it again this winter after our New England ice storm, and it cleared the steps without too much effort.

I used the tool the way it came. The blade is not especially sharp, and I have not tried to sharpen it (I don't own a grinder). It might work even better if sharpened first.

This heavy duty steel chopper weighs about three to four pounds and has a wide blade that chops through ice easily then be used to scrape it away and completely clear the icy area. It is much better than earlier models with wooden handles and thinner blades.

I wanted to update this now that I've been using it on ice buildup over a couple of days of thawing/refreezing in the driveway. I will say, on ice softened by a couple days of sun and above freezing temps, even on gravel, it has been doing a reasonable job and breaking up the 1-2.5" buildup. While a great deal of effort is still required due to its lack of weight, it has proved to be quite valuable indeed compared to my next best (and virtually useless)option in the garage, a transfer shovel. However, where the ice is still frozen solid, it is just as useless as my original review indicates. For this reason plus the lack of weight I'm not upping my rating, but wanted to make sure I don't steer people away if perhaps you are in a warmer climate and usually have the temps on your side helping.

While this may be well built and and of higher quality than the junk ice choppers other reviewers mention, I knew I would be disappointed as soon as i picked up the box. From the product description and enthusiasm in reviews, I thought I had found something along the lines of one I had growing up, which was formed from one piece of solid steel and was difficult to carry as a young kid, let alone use. This has a hollow thin walled handle and weighs just a few pounds. I was not expecting it to be the one of my childhood, (i.e. ~8x heavier), but was expecting at least 2-3x heavier than what it is. "Heavy duty" does not apply here. This will not even think about breaking up ice under gravity alone unless the ice is about 1/2" thick or less and formed on a surface with the friction of teflon. If the ice you need to remove is on gravel, forget it... this is all but useless.

At first I was fairly impressed with this. It's made in America, has decent weight to it compared to some other models out there, and has the appearance of being strong. However, I took this out for the first time today to chip away at some ice. Within three minutes I had bent the scraper. It's not as if I was abusing this tool. I wasn't swinging it like an axe. I was using it properly, as I try to take good care of my tools. Disappointing to say the least. I would definitely not refer to this as "heavy duty". If you're looking for something to use on light jobs this should do the trick. If you're looking for a strong tool to chip away at some serious ice, this isn't for you.

This thing is SOLID. I'd gone through several cheap plastic shovels and cheap ice chippers before I threw my hands up in the air and found THIS beauty.

Chipping ice with this requires minimal effort; just drop it on the location you want to chip and the weight of this thing just punishes that pesky ice.

It's built exceptionally well, and does exactly what I need. When you're ready to stop messing around with cheap chippers, buy this. You won't be sorry that you did.

If you are looking to buy an ice chopper, THIS is the one to get. It is very well made, solid construction, heavy. Made from a solid piece of steel its built to last and worth spending the extra money.
