About the Author

As the executive director and founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, author Irene van der Zande has empowered thousands of parents and other caring adults around the world to take charge of the emotional and physical safety of their kids and other loved ones. As a child who was bullied long ago, Irene promised herself that she would never forget what it was like to feel so alone, sad, and scared. She believes passionately that kids have the right to be safe and the responsibility to respect the safety of others. She is committed to giving adults the tools they need to create cultures of caring, respect, and safety for everyone, everywhere. Irene established Kidpower as a nonprofit organization in 1989 in partnership with educators, parents, mental health experts, child safety specialists, law enforcement officials, and other caring adults. She has led the organization ever since. Instead of using fear to teach children about violence prevention, Kidpower makes it fun to learn to be safe. This is important because kids learn better when they're having fun. The Kidpower Positive Practice Method empowers kids with habits that build their awareness, confidence, and personal power, making them less likely to become victims of bullying, abduction, abuse and other types of physical or emotional violence. Operating in over 20 countries, Kidpower has reached over 2 million people of all ages through in-person workshops and events, publications tailored for different needs, on-line educational resources, videos, and long distance seminars and one-on-one coaching. More About the Author

In 1985, when her family was young, Irene van der Zande protected a group of small children, including her own two, from a man who was threatening to kidnap them. Even though she stopped this attack by yelling and by ordering a bystander to help, this frightening experience left her with a determination to do everything in her power to keep her own kids safe - and all children safe- and finally, to help everyone, everywhere, learn how to use their own power to take charge of their emotional and physical safety.

Today, Irene is an international expert in personal safety, a prolific author, and an inspiring trainer. As the founder and executive director of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, known as Kidpower for short, Irene has been a tireless leader in protecting and empowering children, teens, and adults around the world for a quarter of a century.

Kidpower is a nonprofit leader in child protection and personal safety that has protected over 2 million people of all ages and abilities from bullying, violence, and abuse through educational resources, in-person workshops, and consulting. Kidpower's newest global initiative is the "One Million Safer Kids campaign, which has the goal of making at least one million young people safer from bullying, violence, and abuse through greater awareness, action, and skills by July 1, 2016.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resources for parents! May 30, 2011
By Lynn25
Format:Paperback
This book is a FANTASTIC resource for parents and other people who work with or care about kids. We as adults need to teach kids how to prevent bullying from happening, and how to stop it if it's already started, and this book gives us the tools that we need to do that. It gives clear, step by step instructions about how to practice what they call "People Safety" skills at home, and it's got great resources for families that have specific questions or concerns, like how to work with your child's school to put anti-bullying plans into effect. I particularly like how skill-oriented the Kidpower program is, and how that comes through in all of their materials. Discussing with kids is great, but everyone learns better through practice! This book is definitely worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable and amazing resource! June 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the first time I have found and read a book that deals with bullying in a very hands-on and unique way.
The book has has given me so MANY simple, yet comprehensive, ways to help kids deal with bullying.
I like the way it helps me as an adult to DO something! To actually give kids tools on how to handle bullying and to get ideas on how I as an adult can support kids.
A extremely practical book - and the great thing is the kids love learning the practices!
I would recommend this book to any adult who wants to do something positive against bullying - here is your chance to get knowledge and ideas!

Well-written, useful handbook on what bullying is, why it happens, how to prevent it, and what actions to take when it occurs. Thoughtful and well-balanced, with insight and respect for all sides of this difficult issue. This book will help parents, teachers, school administrators, health-care providers, and every adult who has kids in their life move from fear and reaction, to pro-active planning and healthy responses. Every parent and every school should have this book!
