I have somewhat oily, but otherwise normal, hair and this is by far the worst dry shampoo ever (maybe even the worst hair product ever). I don't understand the rave reviews. Every time I run out of dry shampoo from Klorane or Blow Faux, I give this product another try. I figure, "Hey! I spent $40 on this thing, I might as well finish the bottle. It's so pricey it MUST...

I had red highlights done on my hair and wanted to preserve the color for as long as possible and so I bought this product based my stylist's recommendation. The first time I used it I had a really bad experience - (and now looking back) it was mainly because I didn't hold the spray bottle 10-12 inches away according to the instructions. I ended up spraying the powder on my hair like I would with hair spray and I had globs of black powder everywhere. I couldn't even comb my hair through; my fingers and my comb were black and my hair felt sticky. Additionally, everytime my hair touched anything (e.g. comb, clothes, fingers, pillow) it left black marks. It also left my hair feeling oilier than it originally did. After this experience, I figured I just wasted $40.

Last night, I figured I'd give it another try. I saw other customer reviews on Amazon and read how wonderful the product was and I figured I must've done something wrong the first time around. This time, I held the bottle as far back as possible and I sprayed in short pulses. After each spray, I immediately combed my hair through. This time the results were fantastic. I hadn't washed my hair in two days and my hair was really oily. After about 10 minutes of spritzing and combing, my hair looked like a day's old wash. I woke up the next morning, blew dry my hair alittle and it looks great! When I touch my hair, it doesn't leave anything behind either.

The key is take baby steps with this product. Hold the bottle as far back as possible (like an arm's length) and just do little spritzes at a time and comb through. You'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I swear by this stuff, April 22, 2008
I love love love this hair powder. I saw it once at someone's house and immediately thought it was for covering up bald spots (what can I say I have an big imagination!). I asked my hair dresser about it and she told me it was great stuff that added a lot of texture to your hair while soaking up all the oil.

I guess I should explain that I like big hair, not 80's big, but hair that looks thick and full of body. When I heard it gives texture, I was sold. Anything that makes it easier to get big hair. I also bought that light brown for my friend who doesn't love big hair but has a problem remembering to wash her hair ;)

So there were using this powder and instantly getting addicted. The stuff is A-Mazing, we both agreed. I can now go 4-5 days without washing my hair (but I am not recommending that, I am just saying that it has allowed me to become lazy with my hair). When I wake up in the morning I just need to fluff the hair and it looks like I spent an hour on it. It definitely gives it the dirty texture so it is easy to style, but it doesn't look dirty.

I have used it on longer hair, shoulder length medium layered hair, AND an a-line bob type. I can basically shape my hair anyway I want and it will hold.

For you blonds, I hear cornstarch has a similar effect.....but for everyone else, invest in this cuz it is worth it.

Okay, even though I love it, I have to say that it is crazy messy. I use the black and have learned not to touch my hair or scratch my head, and I am still scared to go out in the rain with it in. The bathroom now needs to be wiped down every time I get ready, and the shower needs to be wiped down more. But lets be honest, now I have awesome hair AND a clean bathroom!

It's so pricey it MUST work this time right? Right?" It never ceases to amaze me how much I hate this thing. I walk around the rest of the day hiding my head in shame and even wishing for my greasy oily hair-- anything but the ugly mess resulting from this product. Believe me, I'm no stranger to dry shampoo. I've been using it all my life. I use this product exactly as directed and then some (8-12 inches away from my hair, 3-4 inches away from my hair, 12-24 inches away from my hair, spraying into the air and twirling into it... nothing works).

Pros:

If you want spray can black paint for your hair, then this is the product for you. The color is the only upside to the product in case you're looking to hide your roots between coloring. But if you already have dark/black hair then this product is utterly pointless as a dry shampoo.

Cons:

Texture- Forget about running your fingers through your hair and having beautiful locks that sways when you walk. Nope. Instead, you'll get "There's Something About Mary" hair that only too much gel creates. It creates a disgusting overly dry brittle bird nest texture. If you walk and the wind catches your hair the wrong way, you end up looking like a lion that just woke up from a nap.

Residue- If you plan on touching your hair, wearing a light-colored sweater or falling asleep on your bed, you'll leave a nasty black smear all over your fingers, clothes and mattress. Even if you're wearing dark clothes, if you touch your hair by accident, you run the risk of getting dark smudges all over your face and arms and bag and books... the list goes on.

Recommendation:

If all you want is to prolong the time between washing your hair and not to cover up bald spots or touch up your roots, then you're much much better off with Klorane or Blow Faux Dry Shampoo. Heck, you're much better off with 99 cent baby powder. For the love of everything pretty and functional, stay away.

This product is a must for covering gray between coloring. It is easy to use and covers extremely well. It only takes a small amount to do the job. My hair is black and my roots are WHITE. This product covers the white roots completely until I can color.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting!, May 11, 2008
I have used this product both to try to camoflage my roots and as a dry shampoo. As a dry shampoo, it works much better. I don't notice much difference with my roots as far as coloring. As a dry shampoo, it adds a ton of body and style-ability to hair. It adds a lot of texture and you can coax it into many styles once you spray this stuff on. It doesn't have an offensive smell either. It is very pricey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Grail for Fine Hair, August 15, 2006

Bumble and Bumble hair powder works for all hair types, but if you have fine hair it is a MUST have.

The powder is an all in one styling tool. It offers unbelievable volume by spraying it on your roots and is a fabulous texturizer. The powder sucks up scalp oils and is finally letting me go multiple days without washing my hair. Us fine-haired gals know our hair looks sooo much better between washings. Bonus, this powder, offered in various shades, helps to hide any grays you might have at your roots.

I have tried other, less expensive, products as well as baby powder for similar effects but this Bumble and Bumble product has met my needs well beyond my expectations. It is worth the high price tag and you can cut out other separate volumizing and texturizing products to offset.

If you have fine, oily dyed-black hair, you'll love this product. I dye my hair a lot and don't like to fade it by washing, but couldn't find a dry shampoo that wasn't white, which always made it look like I had baby powder in my hair. When I saw this item, I was skeptical, but it works really well - not just as a dry shampoo, but it also texturizes my hair and covers my roots. I pretty much love this product - the only problem I have with it is that it sprays a little messily - definitely use it BEFORE you put on your makeup and clothes so you can clean up any little spatters.. but, cleanup is easy - no staining. I recommend this product to those with dyed black hair. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sent by the hair gods, February 1, 2011
This review is from: Bumble And Bumble Black Hair Powder For Inky Brown, Asian, Hispanic, Or Goth Shades 4.4-Ounces (Health and Beauty)
Bumble and Bumble products are top-of-the-line salon-exclusive world wonders.. for a reason. Upon my first use I screamed from the bathroom to my friend "I think I just found the greatest product ever invented." I look like I have a head full of thick black hair, when in reality it's fine and thin dyed black hair with blond roots (which make me look like I'm going bald). I've been a big fan of dry shampoos for the texture and oil absorption (I have an oily scalp too - a great combo with fine/thin hair, let me tell you.) but when your hair is dark, the clay from the dry shampoos dulls your hair and can even leave grey streaks (yikes!). Once you let it dry and then brush through, it doesn't fall into your face or anything. You can't run your fingers through your hair though, black powder comes off onto your hand. Clear dry shampoos do that too, you just can't see it because it isn't dark like this one. Pair it with some Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray for texturized big hair. With these two products, I look like one of those people who might need to have their thick hair thinned out at the salon. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, 4-Ounce Bottle

3.0 out of 5 stars it's ok, January 30, 2011

I have very fine, oily hair. If I don't wash my hair every day, it's extremely noticeable. But as everyone knows, there are days when you have to rush out the door or other circumstances that prevent you from washing your hair.

Because I have black hair and all of the waterless shampoos out there is white, using those products is worse than the oily look. Those dry shampoos make me look like i spray painted my hair gray... yuck.

This is definitely the best one for black hair. However, it gives my hair a very odd texture. My hair is normally very shiny, but this stuff makes it look very dull.

Overall, I only use this when I absolutely have to, but it's much better than the normal dry shampoos, so it's a decent product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jerome Russell spray on hair color is better!, April 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this product because my hair is thin on the top and my scalp is oily. I currently also use X-Fusion and since X-Fusion works very well but doesnt absorb oil i thought this would be the perfect companion. Wrong!! This spray is very messy and makes the hair entirely too dark and unrealistic looking. Jerome Russell sells hair color that can be sprayed in that is very similar if not identical to the way this product works.....for a fraction of the cost! Will not recommend nor purchase again.
