Book Description

**This is the new & revised 2nd edition of Bumped to Berlin, published February 2013**

It all started with a dream. During a semester abroad in Europe, Savannah Page visited Berlin, got lost in a former East German neighborhood, and made a discovery...and a promise. She was enamored of the multikulti city that offered her everything she wanted in a home: big city-life, rich history, on continental Europe, and a diverse community. She was determined to call Berlin home some day.

Five years later, she and her husband found themselves making the giant jump from the heart of America in Oklahoma across the Atlantic to the bustling capital of Germany. Berlin had officially become home and things couldn't have been more perfect.

Until she realized that being bumped to Berlin meant learning the way of the world, auf Deutsch. In a world where there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place...and then some.

In this convivial and bubbly personal / travel narrative, Savannah shares her everyday experiences--and love and frustration--of expatriate life in the land of beer and brats.

From discovering the art of grocery shopping to the simple joys that freshly baked bread hold; from the perpetually looming air of paranoia that invades nearly every aspect of German life to the peculiar way the Berliners enjoy their rare moments of good weather, Bumped to Berlin is Savannah's story of becoming a Berliner. Of being an American living abroad in a city that is surprising her at every turn, and is a constant reminder that dreams can come true...even if they're flavored with a bit of paranoia, excessive cleanliness, and unpronounceable vowels.

Bumped to Berlin is sure to entertain readers who enjoy armchair travels and playful anecdotes of expatriate life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs Work September 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
There are some elements here for a light and funny ex-pat narrative, but the writing needs quite a bit of work, and the book could do with some serious editing. If it was a third of its current length it could cover the same ground and be much tighter and easier to read. Some of the stuff about the German grocery store really is funny, but the discussion of it is far, far too long. There's no need to talk about how the Germans have mastered the "art of grocery shopping." Humorous travel narratives need a more understated voice. I was also troubled by the regular use of the term "Krauts" to refer to Germans. If this term has somehow been reclaimed and isn't an insult I haven't heard about it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish April 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having lived in Germany for 13 years myself, there were parts of this book that tickled my memories, however, the writing is poor and too often redundantly irritating. There are so many better ways to impart cultural differences, even oddities (from our American perspective) than to make -fun -of, which is how this presented to me. Tooting my own horn, I'd have to say that my letters back home to Mother during my own time in Deutschland would be more enjoyable reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry to hear... March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The author of this book must HATE her host country. Constantly calling Germans by the derogatory name 'Kraut' and Germany 'Krautland' is just as derogatory a the N-word is in America.

As an ex-pat from Germany I was interested in seeing how an American would see my home. I am impressed by the half hearted attempts of the author to fit in. And surprised by her sense of accomplishment when mastering the 'art of shopping for groceries.

Maybe a better attitude towards her hosts would make life easier in the old country.
