5.0 out of 5 stars life changing book, March 25, 2005
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)

This is not your average self help book, its life changing!

I love this book. It addresses some specific Issues in a very

direct way. I was looking to help myself. I was looking for

real answers. Something that I could physically do to change

my life. As I read Bumper Stickers, I thought what the heck.

That sound like a lot of work for a theory. But I was

interested in finding out if this really works. If putting up

some little stickers could change my life, in a positive

meaningful way, why not? This book helps explain solutions. I

took from the book, and was able to apply to my life. I found

hope and inspiration from it. I also found that the man was

right. Maybe it's working because I believe it or maybe I

believe it because it's working. Who cares, its working! My

life has changed and I am grateful. I try to keep my bumpers

current.

I recommend reading this book and putting up bumpers to anybody
who want a positive change in life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please ... Do Not Separate the Message from Its Messenger, March 28, 2011
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)
Following a sincere attempt to read and critique this book objectively, I rate both its literary value and self-help message a solid C ... perhaps, grading it charitably, a C+.

However, even assuming that I found Bumper Stickers to be the most eye-opening, soul-inspiring, life-changing book on the planet, I would still implore others to refrain from buying it. Not because I secretly wish others to wallow in misery or I harbor some naive view that all therapists must be without flaws, all preachers must be without sin, or all self-help authors must live by the words they write, but because this particular author is one of -- if not THE -- most disturbed and dishonest individual(s) I (and so, so many others) have ever encountered.

I've had my share of challenges in life and I promise ... if I believed this book included even one positive tidbit you couldn't encounter elsewhere I'd grit my teeth and reluctantly endorse it. But that is far from the case here; Bumper Stickers neither contains any type of transforming information nor reiterates any previously-written self-help material in a manner that guarantees the reader a 'lightbulb' moment. For this reason, I urge you to NOT separate the message from the messenger, and to instead buy a book that is written by someone who is at least capable of empathy and is motivated by something other than (or even in addition to) money.

And I hope the book you DO end up buying turns out to be the perfect one for you. :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution...mind-control ahead!!, May 24, 2004
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)
First of all...I was involved with the Meehan programs...for over 12 years, and the "proceed with caution...mind-control ahead" is not a grudge nor a resentment. I am not a "resentful or bitter ex-staff member", I am a concerned person who has survived the control of "the program"; and I'm just wanting to encourage others involved in this program to question any gut-feeling you may have about the way the program is operated. Bob's soul purpose of writting this book, is more about profit than helping others.
He used 2-people to write this book, 1). my wife, who did the artwork on the cover...he did not compensate her in the beginning and promised her a percentage of the royalties, which she did not receive to this day and; 2). the co-writer of this book had his family torn apart, because his wife was drinking and not seeking help, so Bob Meehan asked him to separate from her...which he did. After the book was published, Bob M. immediately stopped sponsoring him and being supportive. Basically, stopped all relations with him and his family...just left the guy out to dry.
So this book may have some direction on how to deal with life, but the author obviously does not know how.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Book, March 24, 2005
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)
The first time that I read this book, I thought that it was

cool. 1 year later, I read it again. What an eye opener. At

first the concept of actually making bumper stickers for myself

was a great concept. I am a pretty lazy person, so I did not

want to actually do this. The second time that I read the

book; I was at a place in my life where I was looking for a

challenge. I took the challenge of putting up bumpers in the

way that the book suggests. Its a very strange experience. I

started feeling better, not to say that I was feeling bad, but

I started challenging myself in many ways. I Strongly suggest

reading this book, and doing what it tells you. Its fun.

God bless

This has been a great book to read. It has totally helped me and gave me all kinds of ways of thinking that I still use everyday. It also made a lot of sense to me when I was reading it, because it is a book of experience. If you read it, I think it will have an impact on you for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUMP, June 2, 2006
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)

This is simply a collection of things said about this book

It addresses some specific issues in a very direct

way. I was not looking for a "candy coated" solution. I was

looking for real answers.

I found hope and inspiration from this book. I also found

serenity after reading this book, which is something that I had

not had in a long time.

This book is great for any parent or professional who is

looking for something different that works.

All that I know is that this book really made me think. I think

that thinking is good for people. This book is worth reading.

This is not your average self help book, its life changing!

This book bumped me into a positive way of life. It has

challenged me in many ways that most self help books don't. I

highly suggest that people read this book.

This book is a must read. It has truly changed my life for the

good. I am forever grateful to the power of bumper stickers. If

you are looking for an inspiration, read this book.

This book is beyond any other self-help book. When I started

reading this book, I was looking for guidance. This book opened

my eyes to God. It bumps you into a better way of living. The

fast-paced, informal nature of Meehan's writing lends itself to

easy reading.

Bumper stickers doesn't look like much initially, but it's

filled with tiny revolutionary ideas and a method for putting a

more positive direction in each little area of my life.

These little things add up. I've put up "bumper stickers" for

myself at home, on my telephone, in my car, at work, wherever I

want to be reminded of something. I'm the only one that knows

what they mean. It's easy to WANT to be a good person, love

people, be of service, enjoy the simple things in life, be

grateful, live in the moment, but I always seem to have a hard

time remembering those things throughout actually living my day-

to-day life. I read this book 2 years ago and have changed

my "bumpers" periodically to apply to current lessons in my

life and new areas that I want to "bump". There are some

"bumpers" that I smile at every time I look at them, and some

that I hardly notice at all.

During the last 2 years, I have continued to grow, change and

become closer to being the person I want to be. Areas of my

life that I wanted a "bump" in have definitely been "bumped". I

give some of the credit for that to ideas used in this book.

The mere act of asking myself questions like, "what am I going

to like myself for doing better/more throughout my day?"

or "what truth do I want to be reminded of?", is an act of self

love and the beginning of something.

I'll warn you: Sometimes the casual speech used in this book

makes it tricky to read, HOWEVER, re-reading a sentence or two

in order to understand what is being said is definitely

worthwhile.

It is a fun way to live.

Every time I feel stagnant, I read this book. Im reading it

again, this is the 5th or 6th time. It never gets old.

If you like this book, You'll love Beyond the Yellow Brick Road!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob Meehan Rocks!!!, April 22, 2006
By
This review is from: Bumper Stickers (Paperback)
I purchased this book shortly after my daughter decided that she wanted to give the Cornerstone program a try - for thirty days. She agreed to just thirty days of sobriety...that was six months ago. Today my daughter is becoming the young woman she was meant to be without drugs and alcohol. She will be graduating from High School (on time) this coming May. She is enjoying, and is enthusiastic about her sobriety, her life and peers that have a common goal to give sobriety a try. She has her life back, and I have learned so much about myself, and my reactions to things I can't control, and the expectations I had for my children. I must say that I'm experiencing gratitude like I've never known before - just to be able to stay in the moment is very much a relief especially compared to when the child you love so dearly is committing suicide, by abusing mind altering chemicals; because "everyone is doing it." I thought the sleep deprivation I experienced when my daughter was an infant was bad... but it was nothing compared to the not knowing, when, were, or how you were going to find your teenager...fearing the worst of being called to identify a body.

This may be a "pink cloud" but it's my pink cloud and I'm going to savor every moment of it. As a family we have identified the elephant's bad breath, and are all committed to making our home a sanctuary. None of this would have been possible without the help of Bob Meehan's books. We've tried many things...including letting a child "hit bottom."

Just "smoking marijuana, and weekend drinking" is NOT a phase for many young adults. This behavior stunts their emotional development - hello? Would you put beer in a baby bottle? Following the advice of an addiction counselor I turned my head, not condoning the behavior, expressing my concerns to all involved, but ignoring what my gut was telling me, that every one of us needed help. I was loosing my mind and my sobriety. I didn't know what to do when my children became out of control, I understood what it felt like to live with an addict - truly terrifying. I'm thankful that we are all intact, sober and healthy today.

I just finished Bumper Stickers, and I'm ready to get busy with my own "bumper stickers." This book is easy to read and it was described to be by another mother that it "made me laugh at a time when not much was funny in my life. I hadn't smiled let alone laugh for months, maybe years." Although I didn't read it with that much enthusiasm, it gave me a lot to think about in terms of what I need and what I want for my children. The message in invaluable...and will help you get moving especially if you're feeling stuck. What have I got to loose by reflecting on the message in this book, and preparing my own bumper stickers? This is an excellent book and worth every dime I spent on it, including the afternoon it took to read. I'm sure I'll use it for future reference. In fact I'm going to purchase a copy for a family member in trouble.
