Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. In this graphic novel for younger children, Bumperboy and his loyal dog, Bumperpup, discover a place inhabited by a lonely, talking mountain named Jumbra. They also find small marshmallow-like beings called Grums, who tend the trees that help mountains such as Jumbra survive. But Jumbra is now the only mountain left. Someone is kidnapping the Grums, and Bumperboy must try to save them, or Jumbra will die. Although this is the second volume in a series about Bumperboy, children unacquainted with the character will have no problem getting into this stand-alone story. Huey's panel layouts are arranged for easy reading, and she uses simple, clean lines in her black-and-white illustrations, including just enough detail to give the pictures texture. The touch of suspense and dash of adventure will keep readers even older than the target audience entertained. A great addition to any library's graphic novel collection. Kat Kan

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drawings, cute story, June 20, 2007

This review is from: Bumperboy & The Loud, Loud Mountain (Paperback)
I really liked the expressiveness of bumperboy in the simple black and white drawings. It was a cute story, but it was the fundamental nature of bumperboy that just makes it so appealing. and bumperpup is way cool too. I went to see the display of debbie huey's work at the cartoon museum in SF, but was sadly disappointed to see such a small display. I'd really like to see more of her work.

I got this book for my daughter this Christmas as a followup to another Bumperboy book she liked. She says this is awesome. There are some sad moments, but she likes it very much, and especially loves Bumperpup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch, November 8, 2007

This review is from: Bumperboy & The Loud, Loud Mountain (Paperback)
I missed the first Bumperboy adventure (Bumperboy Loses His Marbles), but stumbled across this second installment at this year's Small Press Expo. I flipped through it, loved the artwork, and figured it might make a nice gift for a friend's young son. Well, the kid's going to have to do without, because Bumperboy is staying with me!

This is a fantastic graphic novel that is simple enough to be appropriate for all ages, and yet witty and weird enough for adults to love. Bumperboy is a friendly young lad who wanders around with his dog, Bumperpup, getting in adventures. The world they live in has these kind of wormholes that transport them to new and fantastic places. In this story, one of these portals takes them a talking mountain and the small creatures who live near it. Bumperboy discovers that someone is kidnapping the small creatures, disrupting the fragile ecosystem and threatening the mountain's life. Bumperboy and Bumperpup enlist the aid of a snooty inventor bird (apparently a nemesis of some kind from the first book) to halt the dastardly machinations of the kidnapper (who has a very Snidely Whiplash air to him).

It's simple but effective stuff, with lots of cool little quirks. For example. Bumperpup speaks in his own pictographic language. And there are several oddball characters who Bumperboy consults over the course of the story. The artwork is highly evocative in its simplicity and cleanliness, maintaining a warm tone throughout. The layout is very straightforward and everything about this makes it a great first graphic novel for young (and old) readers. It's somewhat reminiscent of the "Owly" books, but with a cooler, weirder vibe. Top notch stuff -- more please!
