From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-A little boy and his grandfather have a fun-filled time digging up potatoes, carrots, onions, beans, and other vegetables. Bumpety bump, bumpety bump, up and down is what they say each time the boy returns to the wheelbarrow and grandpa pushes him and the bounty all over the farm. A little red hen accompanies them on every page as the boy chatters and the grandfather listens, pushing through the beans, beets, lettuce, and cucumbers. Finally, after they pick some berries, the little hen stops following them. It seems that she has a special surprise to share. A sweet, comical look at crops and caregivers, illustrated with amusing art in vivid colors.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA

From Booklist

PreS-K. In this offering that reads with the rhythm and bounce of a nursery rhyme, a boy helps his grandfather collect fruits and vegetables from the garden: "In Grandpa's wheelbarrow, I bump up and down--bumpety bumpety bump." A red hen follows the pair, and after loading the wagon with produce, grandfather and grandson reverse course and follow the hen back to the shed, where they find a new egg. The story is slight, and those reading aloud may stumble over an occasional offbeat or missed rhyme. Still, the word repetition will encourage spirited chanting along, and young children will find plenty of familiar foods to look at and point to in the cheerful paintings of orchards and garden rows, presented in cross sections that show views both above- and belowground. This isn't a necessary purchase, but the warm camaraderie between grandparent and child makes the story a good choice for sharing among generations, and teachers may want to include the root-to-fruit views in preschool and kindergarten units about growing things. 4.0 out of 5 stars Joyful read-aloud, delicious details, October 14, 2009

This review is from: Bumpety Bump! (Hardcover)
Bumpety, bumpety bump goes the young narrator of Pat Hutchens's joyful picture book. He's bouncing up and down in Grandpa's blue wheelbarrow as together they tour the garden. And who keeps following them? It's a little red hen, pursuing through the potato patch, past the pole beans, into the berry bushes. But then . . . "the little red hen has stopped following us! So we follow her instead," right to a surprise ending.
The colorful acrylic artwork is filled with delicious details, from the blossoms on the potato plants to the twisty root systems of the brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Notice how the stitching on Grandpa's sweater-vest echoes the feather pattern on the persistent hen.
Jaunty, rhythmic text captures the cadence of a wheelbarrow trundling across bumpy ground, making this simple adventure fun to read aloud again and again.
