Joyful read-aloud, delicious details, October 14, 2009
This review is from: Bumpety Bump! (Hardcover)
Bumpety, bumpety bump goes the young narrator of Pat Hutchens's joyful picture book. He's bouncing up and down in Grandpa's blue wheelbarrow as together they tour the garden. And who keeps following them? It's a little red hen, pursuing through the potato patch, past the pole beans, into the berry bushes. But then . . . "the little red hen has stopped following us! So we follow her instead," right to a surprise ending.
The colorful acrylic artwork is filled with delicious details, from the blossoms on the potato plants to the twisty root systems of the brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Notice how the stitching on Grandpa's sweater-vest echoes the feather pattern on the persistent hen.
Jaunty, rhythmic text captures the cadence of a wheelbarrow trundling across bumpy ground, making this simple adventure fun to read aloud again and again.
