5.0 out of 5 stars Bunny Hop
My six year old son loved this book. Easy to read as well as fun to read. Good first reader book. Illustrations were good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book for Newer Readers - a review of "The Bunny Hop", March 19, 2006
Listed as a Level 1 reader, I would say that "The Bunny Hop" is more for readers that have a little experience under their belts, rather than those that are truly reading their first words.

The principal problem for beginning readers is that there are, in general, more words per page than the average totally new reader should have to deal with.

Now, if you look at the first few pages of "Bunny Hop" you might wonder however what I'm talking about, for the first few pages are great for beginners. There is a lot of repetition and only a few words. [Basically children will be counting bunnies from one to nine.] See below for example:

One bunny,
two bunnies
three bunnies... HOP!

But after this everything changes. The author starts to add a lot more words per page, many of whom are not in your typical new readers vocabulary. Words such as: thumpity-thump, cha-cha-cha, and bumpity-bump. Vocabulary such as: Belinda, waltz, and jitterbug.

Here is an example (from a single page) so that you can judge the reading level for yourself:

Poor Buddy say down
all alone.
Then he began to cry.
"I was not born to dance," he said.
"I might as well not try."

Three Stars. [C+]. Cute story and drawings. This book is suitable for more experienced readers. It's also nice that a creative solution is found to Buddy's `big footed' dilemma. [He dances in front!]
