Book Description

4 and upP and up
A big-city rabbit named Bunny Lune wants more than anything to go to the moon. His friend Pyonko has told him about the Japanese tradition that rabbits live there.

How can Bunny Lune manage this incredible trip? Weightlessness makes him feel queasy, and he can’t go for very long without breathing, no matter how hard he tries. Besides, he could never sell enough salad to afford the fare. But maybe there’s a way he can share tea and rice dumplings on the moon after all . . . if he follows the advice of a seasoned traveler and fuels his efforts with creativity.

Radiantly silly details illuminate Kae Nishimura’s unique way of looking at the world, as Bunny and the reader discover how far we can go when we let our imaginations take flight.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Bunny Lune's Japanese pen pal writes him about the fun her family has during a lunar celebration, and then the rabbit becomes obsessed with the moon. He wants to sign up for a moon tour, but the one-billion-dollar cost is daunting. Bunny starts his own business selling hard-boiled eggs, but that fails; working as a carrot for a salad bar isn't cost effective, since at his salary, he needs 20 million days of work. Bunny decides to forget about the moon, but that proves impossible. Only after a chat with the eccentric "Mayor of the Moon" does Bunny realize he can visit the moon any time he wants—in his imagination. There's a bit of a disconnect between the ink-and-watercolor artwork, which will easily catch a preschooler's eye, and the quirky, slightly more sophisticated text, but there's no denying this is a charmer. Bunny, determined and moonstruck by turns, makes a memorable hero (though, curiously, it sometimes seems he's wearing a dress). Throughout, Nishimura's art is deliciously detailed, from the forest of carrots growing on the moon to the teeny-tiny pink rabbits on Bunny's hard-boiled eggs. Cooper, Ilene

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly quirky story, June 15, 2011
This review is from: Bunny Lune (Hardcover)
This is a fabulous book, the number one favourite in our house and we will take it over Gruffalo or Hairy MacLary (both of which we love) any day. This is the story of Bunny Lune's desire to go to the moon, inspired by his Japanese friend Pyonko's letter to him. Bunny's adventures and subsequent discovery that all you have to do is close your eyes and imagine yourself there, are beautifully told, with enough silliness to make Mum and Dad giggle to. The illustrations are beautiful, quirky and amusing. I can't understand why this isn't more popular; I can only think it is an undiscovered gem.
