Book Description

October 23, 2000 1 and up
In this board book filled with vivid colors, an adorable bunny and his forest friends busily prepare for the cold weather to come. Late- fall reds and golds give way to wintry white as a soft blanket of snow covers the forest, settling all but the happy bunny into a quiet, cozy sleep.

Following the success of All My Little Ducklings and Bunny's Rainbow Day, Monica Wellington once again creates a feast for the eyes. Brilliantly colored cut-paper shapes--including lacy snowflakes--enhance each page of the book. Dazzling art coupled with rhythmic text make this a sure bedtime favorite with little ones year-round.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Uncluttered illustrations on sturdy board pages follow bunny as he watches his animal friends prepare for winter. Squirrel and chipmunk gather acorns, bear licks honey, raccoon digs for pinecones, and mouse and skunk find fruits and berries. In the last of the double-page spreads, all settle down to sleep. Colors are clear and bright and the large format provides plenty to look at without appearing cluttered. A cozy book to share with toddlers.

From Booklist

Ages 1-3. In this getting-ready-for-winter board book, a bunny is thrilled^B by the sight of a snowflake and the prospect of winter and watches as other animals--a skunk, a squirrel, a chipmunk, a mouse, a bear, and a raccoon--prepare for the cold. The simple text, only about eight words per double-page spread, conveys the excitement and urgency of winter's approach, and bright, boldly colored cutoutlike illustrations collect more and more snowflakes as the story progresses. This small, cozy book will make an effective bedtime read, too, because all the animals seek shelter and sleep at the end. Connie Fletcher

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book, March 29, 2010
This review is from: Bunny's First Snowflake Board Book (Board book)
Using paper cut-outs that she collects and paints, writer/illustrator Monica Wellington presents a coming of winter tale full of shapes, colors, and textures.

Anyone who has experienced the changing of seasons (or who longs to do so!) will appreciate this story about eight animals and their preparation for winter. All the animals eventually settle down to sleep, with the exception of the namesake bunny and, apparently, a cardinal.

My kids and I have enjoyed this book since they were very young, and it would be a great choice for a quiet bedtime ritual in the tradition of Goodnight Moon.
