5.0 out of 5 stars She's great, she's blunt and she ROCKS!!!!
I didn't know about Tracy Bonham until a friend of mine showed me her song, "Mother Mother". I didn't know what to think at first, and kind of filed away in my memory.

Then I heard the song "Bulldog". I listened to the song, and it really can be taken the wrong way, and I actually think she meant it that way. I fell in love with her after that song. I...

2.0 out of 5 stars Spend your money on something better
The reason I bought this CD is I heard "Shark's Can't Sleep" on the radio and really liked it-sort of a feel-good sounding song. I hoped the rest would be similar, but it really was not at all. I found most of the music almost grating, especially the popular "Mother Mother" and the lyrics quite uninspired. In addition, the CD as a whole lacked...

I have access to both of her albums, and am eagerly awaiting her next album.

She's blunt, she has a great voice and she simply rocks. Typical rock, but with her own bit of flair, making the music truly unique. I think the most unique aspect of her songs is what she sings about. In "Sharks Cant's Sleep", she talks about seeing sharks eating men, and then she ate a man.....and that's not okay. If you see the video...her expression is simply hilarious. She gives you a kind of...sweet smile. Of course, you can't hate her so much for it, because, she knows it wasn't okay. *grins*

Hurry, when I wrote this review, only 5 were left in stock! Hurry up and buy one! You won't regret it! I promise you! Just listen to her music with a slightly....demented frame of mind, and you just might understand them better.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Burdens of Being Good, October 15, 2004
This review is from: Burdens of Being Upright (Audio CD)
Like most people, the song that drew me to this album was "Mother, Mother". My own mother found it rather amusing that this woman on the radio was shrieking about being fine.

I was young when I got it, 12 I think. I didn't understand the meanings of most of the songs, but it didn't matter. Tracy has an undeniable talent, and her songs are compelling even for young'uns like I was.

She tangles melodies in her violin strings and belts a voice out of her 5'2 frame that belongs in someone taller and fatter. Her messages may be confusing but what is good rock without...interesting lyrics?

Tracks to check out: Mother, Mother; Brain Crack; Bulldog. There are more but I can't think of them right now.

4.0 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED AND UNDER APPRECIATED, February 19, 2003

This review is from: Burdens of Being Upright (Audio CD)
the burdens of being upright is one amazing trip of a record. i think its only flaw is that at times it is a little too derivative. "tell it to the sky" comes off like black hole sun era soundgarden and "navy bean" is one great rocking riff but, to me, is very nirvana circa incesticide. there is also the radio candy hit "mother mother" which is one great song. smart, toungue in cheek humor with great music to back it up.
i see alot of reviewers did not like her voice but i find tracy a good singer, capable if singing and really belting out a good scream when the song calls for it. there were a couple of weaker songs but all in all this is a good cd.

Like a lot of people I saw here on the Blueman tour where she was amazing. This is a solid CD throughout. I highly reccomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most under-rated artists around, May 2, 2001

This is one of those rare CDs where you can listen to it, beginning to end, and never feel the urge to skip a track or turn it off. I listened to this over and over again for 3 days, driving from Connecticut to Minnesota, and I never got tired of it.

Most people remember the song "Mother, Mother" if they hear it, but they will instantly connect with each of the other songs after just hearing them once. I know I did. "The One", "Navy Bean", "Brain Crack", "Bulldog", etc.--each and every single one is a gem.

Every person listening can draw something different from each song. Tracy has a knack for creating music that everyone, especially young women, can relate to.

Her voice is the perfect "sing-along" voice--you don't have to be another Christina Aguilera to belt out each song along with Tracy. (Not that she's isn't a great singer--she is--but her voice is just raspy enough so that those of us not blessed with brilliant voices can sing along quite contently.)

Each song is written the way a song should be written--soulful, deep, yet also understandable and suitable for even the least poetically-minded person.

There isn't a bad song on this album, and anyone who buys it will be pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it is. I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy "Burdens". I know I do. :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard Rocking and Biting, November 11, 2001

Tracy Bonham makes great music here. She has a terrific rock and roll sensibility. The range of her songs lend a drama to this album that makes you want to scream along.

It reminds me a bit of Belly, and it sometimes blends in with my Joydrop, as it shares the pop drama that inherits from Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush. But Tracy is able to really sell simply instrumentally backed songs like "Kisses" in a way that few artists can match, and in a way it makes me think of T-Rex.

On the other hand "Bulldog" just makes you want to dance in your chair.

Yes the lyrics are cryptic and not always meaningful, but the whole of the album is a good addition if you have a soft spot for the female vocalist's snarl...

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tracy gets down with her talented self, November 28, 2000

This girl can rock! There are some very cool songs here. I remember watching her on MTV a few years back and thinking her songs were cool, but, I didn't get the CD until today. Now that I've discovered her, I intend to empty my wallet for this lady. "Mother, Mother" is a funny and equally alarming song filled with personality, but, I don't need to tell you that, because I'm sure you've heard that song. Really the best song on the album is her not as popular second single "The One", but, "Bulldog", "Tell It To the Sky", "Navy Bean", and "Sharks Can't Sleep" are woopty freakin' great as well. Great CD if you like alternative rock. Check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF THE '90's, no lie!, February 2, 2000
This woman knows how to rock! She is a great lyricist as well as a great singer! She screams, and proves that she is certainly not a waif! There are only TWO woman I can think of who can truly rock: TRACY BONHAM and FLEMING McHenry of FLEMING AND JOHN. Both are 2 of the best singers ever! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, October 21, 1999

Just rediscovered this one. Love it! (Originally bought it after hearing "Mother Mother" and thinking "I MUST have that song!") Loud guitars, strong female vocals, lots of energy. But also anger tempered with fun and a sense of humor. Personally I'd own this just to prove that Pepsi's "The One" theme is actually from a song with the lyrics, "Say you love me as you pull the trigger... Better today rather than tomorrow." Yea, you're THAT one =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding album!, September 30, 1999

Great CD, and not just *Mother Mother.* Many excellent songs here such as *Navy Bean* and *Bulldog*. Lots of energy, spirit, and originality in the instrumentals and lyrics. I use this CD to work out to, when I need a pick-me-up, or when I'm feeling pissy. It always hits just the right spot. Can't wait for the next album. Seen Tracy in concert twice: she's great!
