5.0 out of 5 stars Burger AFter Church July 23, 2002
Format:Audio CD
"Burger After Church", the second collection of genius work from The Waybacks, serves to satisfy the appetite whet by first for quality "new grass", humor and virtuoso musicality. Each piece on this CD is a demonstration of not only the group's individual talents, but, and more impressively, the unique chemistry that exists between and within the group.
Their rendition of "Last Date" is inspired. Bar after bar of gently twisted improvisation leads you through the familiar tune to places that Floyd and Roy never new existed within the melody.
"The Return" is sure to raise the hairs on the back of your neck as we're transported to another time and place to witness a myth come to life.
"Police Dog Blues" exemplifies the humor of this gang that demonstrates that they have yet to take them selves too seriously, and that they're still willing to laugh at themselves for our entertainment.
James, Stevie and Jacques interactions are pure genius. If you love good music, whether you are a bluegrass fan or not, you will love this CD. Buy it and share it with those you love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holy Buckaroos, Churchman! July 24, 2002
Format:Audio CD
If you love acoutic music, good clean fun and great songwriting don't pass up "burger after church." This cd is seamless from one song to the next. There are virtuoso instumenentals, story telling ballads and a true sense of what Newgrass music is all about. The Waybacks take great musicians, group them together add water and make one great foot stompin cd. Their blend of folk, blues and country are a can't miss. Fun for the whole family!

This CD is a must-have for any lover of acoustic music! On the surface, you'll find a delightful variety of instrumental and vocal songs executed by virtuoso musicians of the first order. Listen carefully and you can appreciate the selection of fine antique instruments used to record this CD. Comprised mostly of original tunes, there are a couple of new interpretations of songs you may have heard before. Their rendition of Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" is the most compelling arrangement I have ever heard. Also on this CD is the haunting sequel of Archie Fisher's "Witch of the Westmereland", which the Waybacks recorded on their first album, "Devolver", also a supurb CD. The sweet, melodic simplicity of "Saltflat Rhapsody" will have you tapping your foot and grinning. The lead guitar breaks on "Bright Place" will take your breath away, and "Police Dog Blues" rounds out the album with its fun, loose junk-yard sound. The Waybacks have a sound which is hard to categorize, but whatever genre you prefer, you'll appreciate the fine musicianship expressed on this album. I say GET IT!

"Burger After Church" continues to move The Waybacks to the forefront of the evolution/revolution of Bluegrass to a place which includes: zazz, blues, and some of the best accustic playing which can currently be heard on the planet. Like Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, James Nash's guitar playing is among the top ten who have ever played the instrument. Stevie Coyle's finger style guitar is on a plane with Jorma Kaukonen. Together, they "peel the paint off the ceiling", all with accoustic instruments. This is a great piece of work by a great group of artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!! December 12, 2006
By M.B.
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bluegrass/country fiddle-picking. Whatever you want to call it, this is some energetic and fun music. I especially like the high speed instrumentals. I've seen Chojo play up close in person, and he is a true musician. This ablum is made by a bunch of fantastic musicians (remember the day when musicians could play real instruments and hold a tune without digital fakery?). A definite must have---you'll be pleasantly surprised!

5.0 out of 5 stars Waybacks are way forwards August 6, 2002
Format:Audio CD
A superb melange of acoustic music that's fresh and innovative with outstanding musicianship. It's music that makes you feel happy just listening to it. The Waybacks blend a number of musical styles with electrifying results that vary from fast 'n' frenetic to serene 'n' sensual. "Saltflat Rhapsody" is "silk for the ears." It's that smooth and soft. "Police Dog Blues" is funky-boppy with undertones of humor. The double mandolins on "Turkish Stalemate" are pure perfection. Their rendition of Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" is the best I've ever heard. Their lead singer emotes from every pore; he can make you feel the words down to your bones. Their first CD was remarkable in and of itself, but this one is truly amazing. In short, these guys are the standard by which future string bands will be judged!
