Product Description

Size: 48 Plants

Burgundy Glow Ajuga is a low growing evergreen perennial 6-10 in (15.2-25.4 cm) tall which forms a dense matlike groundcover as it spreads along underground stolons. As is typical of herbaceous plants in the mint family, Ajuga has square stems and opposite or whorled leaves. The basal leaves are dark green and oblong or spoon shaped, 3-5 in (7.6-12.7 cm) long and 1-2 in (2.5-5.1 cm) wide; stem leaves are a little smaller. The flowers (usually blue or purplish) are about 1/2 in (1.3 cm) long and borne in whorls on erect spikes 6-10 in (15.2-25.4 cm) tall. They are typical mint flowers: tubular with two unequal lips. Location: Ajuga is native to Europe, western Asia and Iran. It has escaped cultivation and become naturalized in some parts of the northeastern and northcentral U.S. Ajuga grows rapidly even in poor, heavy soils.

Light: Grow Ajuga in partial shade to full shade. Ajuga can tolerate morning or late afternoon sun, but the leaves will surely scorch if they are exposed to full midday sun.
Moisture: Ajuga needs moist conditions. It does best in fairly well drained soils with frequent watering.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3 - 9.

Propagation: Ajuga is easily propagated by separating the little plants that arise from the spreading stolons. This can be done any time of year. Ajuga also can be started from cuttings in summer. Larger areas can be seeded with Ajuga. Ajuga makes a showy groundcover in moist, shady areas of the landscape. It grows well in areas too shady for grass. Under ideal growing conditions Ajuga will spread rapidly from its underground runners. It forms such a dense mat that weeds cannot grow through it. Immediate shipping in 2 1/4" Peat Pots.

Received these Plants, Burgundy Glow Ajuga, a little over a month ago. Waited to see how they would do before I reviewed them. When they arrived, the plants were healthy and in very good condition. I planted them on the side of our house which is mostly shade and trees. Every plant has taken and they are already twice as big as when I got them and starting to spread. They are very attractive. Just love them! Would definitely order from this nursery again.

I had recently planted several Burgundy Glow Ajuga which I had bought at my local nursery. My sons tortoise loved them as much as I did, and quickly devoured about half of my plants. I originally had selected these to plant near some yarrow, but soon realized that they would look lovely around some pots which were spilling over with lamium, at the foot of some hydrangea pistache, in a shaded area under forest pansy, a space holder for calla lillys, and on and on. When I tried to purchase more locally, I was unable to find more than a few anywhere in town. I was skeptical of ordering live plants by mail, however after reading many positive reviews I decided to take a chance. The plants arrived quickly so they did not spend much time in a box, they were carefully packed with tape across the top of each pot to keep soil in and plenty of packing foam to protect the foliage from damage. They were slightly wilted, however when I placed the pots in a semi shaded area on the soil and lightly watered them, they looked fantastic within a couple of hours. These are small plants, I believe they are in 2 inch sectioned six packs, they were however, well rooted and once planted they just about doubled in size with in three weeks. Purchasing this quantity in the 4-6 inch pots I had bought at a nursery would have had a considerable additional cost. I will keep Hirts/Amazon in mind in the future when I need large numbers or of small pots.

Just had them a few days, but they look good. All 48 arrived intact and in good shape. Only one corner plant seemed a little weak, but it planted OK and will likely survive. We got a nice soaking rain after planting and they perked up nicely. They are small, but have nice root density. You want small to keep the weight down and shipping cost reasonable. Got all kinds of advice on how far apart to plant them, with a concensus averaging about 8-12". This was closer than I previously estimated, and we have a large bed to cover, so I planted them about 12-15" apart and covered half the bed. We ordered another 48 to finish the bed. I don't mind if it takes a while to cover the bed--what they replaced was so ugly it can only improve. Only thing I wish is that they would sell 96. There was more room in the box and they could have easily have added more plants and hopefully reduced the overall shipping cost. I emailed them and suggested it, but they basically just said no. I suppose their records would show how many people have multiple 48 plant orders....

Dissappointed. Plants were dried up or in very critical condition. Plants much smaller than described.

Four to Five plants did not survive since they were on the corners of the flat and did not have enough room .The rest have been planted and will be a wonderful addition to my garden as they fill in.

About 10 of the 48 plants were DOA but based on price per unit still a better deal than most nurseries. I have not checked into their return\replacement policy yet.
