The subtitle of this book notwithstanding, Richard Burton the man appears to have been the same as the mytha tempestuous alcoholic and womanizer who squandered his considerable acting gifts on too many mediocre films in his eagerness for wealth. Even though Burton contains nothing particularly new or startling, it is better researched than most movie star biographies, and it is well written. Some people important in Burton's life (most notably Elizabeth Taylor) apparently declined to be interviewed, but Junor's book is still preferable to Paul Ferris's Richard Burton ( LJ 11/1/81).
