A German band..(they sing in English..very well) somewhat in the sound realms of Love Like Blood (hardly), Dreadful Shadows have an original approach to Gothic Rock with proverbial deep brooding vocals. Concentrating on musicianship as much as the occasional synth on "Burried Again", The sound is full, rich, and layered. This entire album flows; as if the songs were meant to be played in the order they chose. An emotional rollercoaster, tracing the lines of love , darkness, humanity; fate, strength and futility. From the slow, beautiful, and haunting "Obituary" to the moving piano and guitar backed "Racking Call". One of the few bands in the 90's gothic rock genre with a full album... that have held my attention...and CD player hostage for months at a time.

Whoa. Great stuff here. I'm aware it is pretty much no longer availible here, but Songsearch.com has it. Now, allow me to review the tracks.
1. "Providence" ****
Deep, deep moving stuff. This sometimes overpowering track features 4:03 minutes of gothic instrumental greatness. A perfect 'kick off' for this wonderful record. Best part, it feeds right into the next track.
2. "Chains" *****
Speed violins, powerful riffs, and a steady drum tab to tie it all together. This song would've made the perfect single for this record, because once you hear it, you need it more. Angry most of the way through, but still senseful. Not like angry 'pop' bands like, Korn or Disturbed.
3. "Condemnation" ***
Nothing too great, but it is a nicely written track, and a good separator between the two best titles on the record. It'll have you screaming, "LET ME OUT!" ~.0
4. "Dusk" *****
What is there to say but, perfect. I honestly didn't think the perfect dark song could exist, until this track came along. Truly a haunting song all the way through. It'll have you singing with all your emotion, as it plays over and over. "It's a kind of death - But you're not dead".
5. "Obituary" ****
Just plain depressing. This'll calm you down from the anger that the first four songs give off, and instantly make you frown, perhaps even, tear up a bit. The long intro fits 'dead' on in this ballad of a lovers final words.
6. "Everlasting Words" *
Cliché, mostly. The edge that Shadows has against other Gothic metal bands, was not used during the writting of this song. It's basically, "I hate God. Life Sucks. So, I hate myself, you, and I'm gonna yell about it." Only reason it gets one star is the cool talking part toward the end.
7. "Dissolution" ***
Catchy, to say the least. This is yet another angry title, but done in an original angle. Its more from the eyes of the one being haunted by an angry person, rather than the other way around. At least, that's how I read into it. My complaint, not enough violin.
8. "Mortal Hope" ****
Actually, somewhat of an uplifting track. It seems as though it is the silver lining on the gray rain cloud. The unique drums and flutish type sounds start this song off, leading into the soft guitar. It gets heavy as it goes on, and is truly one of the most original Shadows track. Which is saying something, as they have tons of originallity.
9. "The Racking Call" ***
The lyrics are great in this song. Painting a picture of a person being haunted by memories. The music is good, I suppose. Once again, I'd like to see violin. The chorus is the best part, especially how falls into the second verse.
10. "Buried Again" ***
This is what final tracks are about. Tying the package all together with a swift, yet soft, slow ballad. The best part of this song is the very end, when begins playing the piano best from "Obituary". I guess it's some sort of bonus track, or something, but its so close to the end of "Buried Again", it's almost like its fade out.

Over all, this CD is worth owning, especially if you already like Dreadful Shadows, and are looking for another title from them, this is the one. I highly doubt that any Gothic metal band could come close to topping this record. It truly is a masterpiece. And think of this, they only had three remaing members at the time this was recorded. Sven (vocals, guitars, keyboards, lyrics), Jens (bass), and Ron (drums, sunglasses).

This album combines fast, rock like music, with slow doomish music. Also, the vocals on this one are quite incredible. They are very gothic, and the lyrics are of pain and misery, which i am a fan of.
The best songs on this album are chians, comdemnation, dusk, everlasting words, and dissolution. The racking call is good too.
Overall, i would say that these are talented muscians, you can really get into sven's voice and the way he presents his vocals.
