Editorial Reviews

Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up six feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery, and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time; fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only ninety minutes to be rescued before his worst nightmare comes true.

You wouldn't figure a movie that spends the entire 90 minutes stuck inside a coffin with just a single actor could be anything but boring, but thanks to a real revelation of a performance from Ryan Reynolds, Buried defies the odds. The premise is simple. A civilian truck driver in Iraq wakes up and finds himself buried alive. Because it's shot in real time, every suffocating minute he fights through, we also share in the agony. I must warn you that patience is required. The movie moves along at a decent pace and there is plenty of suspense, but we as the audience experience nothing other than what this unfortunate character is going through. This includes a couple of minutes along the way of staring at a black screen as his various lights go out. Don't worry too much though, because he has a zippo, flashlight, two glow sticks and the faint light from a cell phone to help us see what is going on. The phone also come in handy for dialogue purposes. Why does he have all of these things? Well, I won't ruin it for you.

This can easily be dismissed as a gimmicky film, but unlike Open Water and Frozen, where people are trapped in one area for most of the running time, Buried never loses steam and is very believable. I never considered Ryan Reynolds to be a good actor before, though I didn't dislike him, but his acting here is near Oscar nomination worthy. He makes one guy in a box interesting and more importantly, you care about what happens to him. I read the dude got a bald spot and dislocated his shoulder during the 17 days shooting days he spent in that wooden coffin. It would take some big bucks just for me to do that alone, without the whole trying to act while extremely uncomfortable part of the equation. Hopefully this will lead him away from movies like The Proposal and down the path of quality projects in the future.

Definitely check it out on DVD, but if it's playing near you, see it on the big screen. It takes claustrophobia to a whole new level.

I bought this movie. I'm always looking for different ways of telling a story. This was excellent storytelling. Now I'm extremely claustrophobic. It's difficult getting me inside of an elevator. So everytime there was a shot of this enclosed space, I found myself hyper-ventilating. It's not shot in the 'first person' but still you have no one but the Paul Conroy character to identify with. You begin to see, feel, hear and experience his situation along with him. His sense of helplessness, growing fear and panic is yours as well. I am not a 'spoiler' so this review will be brief. Suffice it to say it was not a waste of money. Kept me enthralled and left me weary and weepy (is that a word?) to the end. Gave me a lot to think about and not easy to shake off. I highly recommend this movie to those who are looking for more entertaining, cerebral cinema viewing. Just my 3cents.

A man wakes up to find himself in the dark, trapped in a small space like a coffin. All he can find is a lighter and a cell phone. And the cell phone's battery is running very low and is likely to be out of power at any moment. Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is the man, an American truck river who is literally buried alive. In this riveting thriller Paul tries to figure out how to contact the right person to get a help before it is too late.

The thrilling film is an admirable feat on the part of the scriptwriter Chris Sparling and the director Rodrigo Cortés. They refuse to rely on familiar narrative devices such as flashbacks, making the viewers share the same claustrophobic experiences of being trapped in a wooden box. It is like reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story, a well-told tale of terror that grabs your attention instantly and never lets go.

But the real star of the suspenseful film is of course Ryan Reynolds as the buried man. Unique as it is, the film's claustrophobic premise is a tricky thing to get right without capable actors, but his excellent performance almost single-handedly carries the film, of which camera consists of close ups and middle shots. His acting is effective, even in the film's darkly funny moments.

The 95 minute thriller is based on a simple concept (one man, one set), brilliantly executed by the entire cast (voices and sound effects play significant roles to enhance the suspense). Like some of the recent Spanish films ("The Orphanage" "The Others" and many others), Rodrigo Cortés's "Buried" is a gripping thriller with originality.

obviously there are movies that some rave about and others can't stand (matrix was that movie for me.. I *hated* the matrix, the plot was an overused remix of other movies, and good lord keanu reeves has the dramatic range of a chicken. no, earth worm. no, rock.. but I digress...). Then there are those loved by only a small few.

Bottom line, this movie required some very creative directing, writing, acting and lighting. To make a movie that takes place entirely inside of a coffin is an ambitious venture. Here it is quite well done. Just when you think where else can they go with this, they come up with some other plot device to move things along.

the "political message" here is anything but.. Wall-E had more of a overt message to send (which was disappointing as I had high hopes for that movie).

** warning: spoiler alert **

as history has shown us, people can't stand movies that don't have happy endings. boo hoo, go watch it's a wonderful life. i guarantee you if this movie had ended on more of a positive note, it would've gotten more favorable reviews.

this movie is definitely outside of the mainstream romcom action adventure horror BS that we're all subjected to day in and day out from hollywood. truly unique story lines are hard to find. while the notion of being buried alive isn't a new one, and this movie certainly causes one to reflect back to tom hanks with his volleyball on the island, it is unique and enjoyable through and through.

oh, and thank god it was a snake and not a spider, I did appreciate that. I repeat, snake good, spider bad.
