Format: Hardcover
Written for the layperson, this is both informative and entertaining. A sample paragraph here, from the chapter on The Great Code-Breakers: "Nevertheless, the code-breakers went to work. There were dozens of them, all over Europe, in Britain, in the United States. Inevitably they got some of their translations all balled up; they made a few crash landings in the highlands of etymology, and they got into unbecoming fights with each other. Most of them were geniuses."

Amazon lists the reading level incorrectly on this item: baby to preschool is way off base. This would be appropriate for skilled young teenage readers or adults with an interest in archaeology or ancient history. Talks of Troy, the Hittites, and many other discoveries in Turkey. Includes many b&w photo illustrations.

one of the major accomplishments of this book is its clever melding of science and travel writing. what could have been merely educational suddenly became exciting and enjoyable. reading this book, the author's passion and sense of discovery was surpassed only by my own. turkey came alive in my mind...it is no longer the vague smear on the map it used to be. now i'm dying to see it in person! i recommend this book to anyone with an interest in science or classical culture. troy, king midas, mt. ararat, the golden fleece...it's all here! fascinating place, fascinating book.
