Book Description

March 8, 2012 The Goth Girl Mysteries (Book 1)

A new paranormal mystery from award-winning author Linda Joy Singleton—featuring goth girl Thorn from The Seer series.

Thorn Matthews is a Finder, a person with the psychic ability to find things just by touching an object. The visions she gets from objects—events and memories—are what guide her to the things that need to be found.

When Thorn locates a mysterious locket, it leads to a shocking and grim discovery. Now she’s implicated in a crime and surrounded by people she’s just met at her new school, any one of whom could be hiding a terrible secret. To clear her name, Thorn reluctantly uses her music skills to enter a school talent competition, which she suspects is part of the killer’s cover. Could one of her new friends be a murderer?

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

With plots involving twins, cheerleaders, ghosts, psychics and clones, Linda Joy Singleton has published over 25 midgrade and YA books.

When she's not writing, she enjoys life in the country with a barnyard of animals including horses, cats, dogs and pigs. She especially loves to hear from readers and speaking at schools and libraries. She collects vintage series books like Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden and Judy Bolton.

When Linda is asked why she'd rather write for kids than adults, she says, "I love seeing the world through the heart of a child, where magic is real and every day begins a new adventure. I hope to inspire them to reach for their dreams. Writing for kids is a gift, a responsibility, and an honor."

More About the Author

From Linda Joy Singleton:

When I was 9, I wrote a short story about a cat named Taben and stapled it into a "book" with pictures, too. A year later I rewrote the book, writing it neater, adding chapter titles, and putting games in the back. I didn't know it then but I was "revising" my work, an early step to learning how to become a writer.

When I was 14, I challenged myself to type a chapter a day over my 2 week Christmas vacation, and I finished a book (200 pages) in two weeks. This was an important achievement to me because I proved to myself that I could finish a book. Up until then I had many starts but only one "finish."

So you'd think I was poised to become a young published author? Maybe...but life jumped ahead of my dreams. I started working at age 17 plus had a short marriage. I didn't dust off my writing dreams until I was 27 and a mother of toddlers. I started off small, writing in the evening when my husband was home to help with the kids. By the time they were in school, I had a schedule of writing in the mornings. I sold my first book when I was 30, a chapter book called ALMOST TWINS. Someday (when I'm quite famous) this will be my more rare book since only a few thousand were ever printed and it was only sold in school book fairs. My first book never made it to bookstores.

My 36th book, THE SEER #6. MAGICIAN'S MUSE, came out in 2010. And in 2012, a spinoff from THE SEER starring Thorn, BURIED, comes out in March. Also, I'm working on a big world-creating book now that will be my biggest achievement yet...stay tuned for more dreams coming true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciousness... March 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was fun yet had a very intense plot and totally fascinating sort of flawed quirky characters. Thorn, Rune, Amelie...friends albeit quirky friends...are sort of unique at their high school.

Thorn whose real name is really Beth Ann and Rune...whose real name is really Rune...bond together...along with Amelie at school. Amelie appears to always wear fairy wings. Rune and Thorn are ringed, pierced and very Goth. All of the major issues in their lives are discussed at the local donut shop with a baker who determines the exact donut to fit a mood...I loved this little quirky bit of the story.

Thorn gets involved in a mystery. She finds a locket with hairs on the inside that sort of leads her to a tiny grave. Although she is not the suspect in this crime...people believe that she knows more about it then she is telling. Thorn seems to have a sort of prediliction to find things...sort of her calling.
And she is determined to find out who is responsible for the bones and who really owns the locket.
She has some family issues, too...her father is out of work and they have just moved so she is missing her old life while trying to adjust to a new one.

Thorn learns about life and people and secrets by trying to solve this mystery that she is sort of right in the middle of.

There are friend issues and trust issues and family issues. There is a sort of avenger character called the Grin Reaper because he wears a smiley face hat. And all of these characters are interesting.

I thouroughly enjoyed this book.

I will explore more of this author's books in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorn is back! September 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Thorn Matthews is very much a gothic girl with a few secrets from her new friends in Nevada. Her family moved to Nevada so her mother could become a minister in a local church. Thorn does her best to fit in with a group of friends at school Rune and Amerie. Rune is as close to Thorn in the way they dress and things they talk about then twins could be.

When Thorn stumbles across a locket she finds herself wanting to find out more about it and who it belongs to. The locket leads Thorn all over town from a baby grave to accusing a few classmates of having a baby. She finds the truth out eventually.

Also going on is the Grin Reaper a local legend never spotted but always there to dish out justice to those who deserve it. Thorn stumbles across the Grin Reaper and even identifies who it is, he strikes a deal with Thorn to keep her secret about finding the baby grave if she doesn't tell anyone who he is. He also ends up taking her on a couple of missions of justice.

I enjoyed reading about Thorn, Rune Amerie and Thorn's family. I found it refreshing to read about a girl not afraid to be who she wants to be regardless of what others think. Ms. Singleton's ability to share Thorn with the world is so great. Can't wait to see what is next for the Gothic Girl!
