More About the Author

XJ Selman is an author of science fiction, fantasy, and anything that crawls into his head. He also spends his time freelancing for multiple websites including Cracked.com, where he learned the art of suppressing his desire to reply to every comment.

XJ takes most of his inspiration from authors such as George R.R. Martin, Steven Erikson, David Wong and Hugh Howey. Of course, he'd never compare himself to any of them, but he is sincerely trying.

Buried Hope is a sci-fi novella built around a dystopian society called Spes. In a very restricted environment, the people are heavily governed by the "Eye" and the 'peacekeeping' Eye's Guard, where they only have one freedom: their thoughts. The hopes and dreams of the people of Spes revolves around returning to the World Above, but to them the world is dead, and toxic to anyone but the blood of the Number, a single bloodline of those said to be immune to the dangers of the outside world. It's up to the Numbers to survey the world above, and bring word to the people when it is finally safe to emerge, but it's not that simple.

Now this plot revolves around several main characters (surprising for a book this size) who each have their own unique roles in the story, including Number Thirty-Two. I found that the characters were very well-thought-out & refreshing. They each had their own perspective on the situation, and one thing I've found about a lot of these characters is that when you think you know their place... their exact role in the story down to the fact that you can practically guess the conclusion, you're wrong. This is the first book in the series and at this point I can't guess where any of the characters will end up. That's a plus for me, because it kept the story interesting.

So you've got an pretty good plot and unique characters. Now onto the prose. Selman has a very descriptive writing style that I also find distinctive from other authors. I notice the book goes into a lot of detail, but only about informative things. Rather than go into extra detail to describe say a specific setting, the book takes the time to go further into the plot with background information, or describing the way things run in Spes, or a certain character's history.

XJ Selman has created a complete and fully realized world in "Buried Hope." He throws his readers into the dystopian society of Spes without self-conscious information dumps or flashbacks, allowing his story to unfold organically through the lives of his well-imagined characters. We move through the lives of several of these individuals, seamlessly experiencing events from different perspectives and social levels. Selman's natural, flowing prose carries the reader from one chapter to the next without effort. The reader never has to push through a dull segment or skip over a patch of unnecessary detail. In the end, Buried Hope is a powerful, but entertaining, social, political and philosophical commentary written in a fluid, poetic style that holds both message and escape. I obviously enjoyed it and look forward to the author's future work.

"Buried Hope (Spes)" in a short work that is the first part of a serialize fantasy adventure by author XJ Selman. This Kindle e-book was approximately 84 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at the time of writing this review.

Please Note: the author provided me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Spoilers (general theme)

After an ancient apocalyptic event had made Spes' surface uninhabitable, life had been forced to retreat underground. The ruling government, through time, have become totalitarian and brook no dissent. But to keep the restless population placated, a person from a specific human lineage (called a Number), immune to the harsh environment up top, is periodically sent up to the surface to see if the conditions have become more supportive of life. Of course the answer has alway been no... until now. The lie, spreads like wildfire throughout the underground colony and as the old saying goes, the natives have become restless.

End Spoilers

Some thoughts on "Buried Hope"...

1.) the writing has a professional quality to it... prose from a truly gifted writer.

2.) the sense of pace and timing is spot one, making this by book's end, a real page turner.

3.) several main characters that the author has spent some time developing, giving the entire story a sense of realism and depth.

4.) an epilogue that will whet your appetite for the next installment.

Impressions:
A tale that started slowly but picked up pace as it went along, getting better and better as it neared the ending. A book that makes you realize the difference in the quality of writing skills between authors... and XJ Selman has that elusive attribute.

As it is... 5 Stars.

This book is awesome. The pace is exciting and keeps you wanting more. It's like a roller coaster. XJ builds each part of the story, stacking it perfectly and the next. Each character is formed slowly and distinctly so that each feels real. I just can't say enough good things; it's all good.

Buried Hope, ranging only 7 chapters, embodies a drab world in which Selman bases his characters; placing them into a strict society that strives on the dream of living on the surface once again.

XJ Selman's writing seamlessly carries the reader through the chapters and engrosses them through every page until there are no pages left to turn. Each character's perspective is well done and, although the chapters are written through separate perspectives, Selman manages to carry the story with ease, never needlessly straying from the story or failing to keep the reader entertained.

I casually read the book within a few days and enjoyed every moment of it (and am enthusiastically looking forward to the next installment.) With such a short read and low price, there really is no reason you should not give this book a view.
