As my title for this review states, at the outset I would like to warn readers and potential buyers of this record what they're actually in for. "Buried Treasure" (2005/6) was originally released as a DOUBLE disc of Sailor recordings previously not available on vinyl or cd. This excellent collection, contained songs spanning the band's 30 years existence, including songs from the pre Sailor period, the Kajanus/Pickett album "Hi Ho Silver", songs from the unreleased 7th Sailor album "Tv Land",songs from the band before they reunited in 1989, and then some later recordings not released on cd. So in effect this release was truly a collection of rarities. It should be added that this release was a limited one on a different music label - Belerion. THIS 2007 "BURIED TREASURE", with the same cover, bears no resemblance to the anthology I just referred to. IT IS just another rehash of the bands "Greatist Hits" - previously rehashed under various guises. Whilst for some who have no connection with Sailor and would like to sample their work, it might prove to be an ideal introduction,for the rest of us more familiar with their work it's just more of the same. It's not that the tracks selected are terrible, they aren't, in fact they're not too bad as fas as Sailor compilations go. There is even the bonus of 5 tracks being added from the long deleted "Dressed For Drowning" album, which for me is the sole reason for buying it. The previously unreleased on cd single "Don't Send Flowers" is worth it just for my collection.
All that aside, there's nothing special about this collection. I might add the 2005 German complilation, from memory titled "Down By The Docks: Best of Sailor" or something similar, is the definitive collection of Sailor's music covering the full 30 years of recordings, including songs from all albums, which this cd doesn't (there are no songs included from the "Checkpoint" (1977) album). It might be worth seeking out that recording rather than being confused and disappointed with this one.
