"Great '80's Dolly",

Released on June 8, 1983 to coincide with Dolly's first HBO television special "Dolly...Live from London", "Burlap and Satin" may not be a fantastic Dolly record, but it does contain some nice gems including her first recording of "Appalachian Memories" (also known as "Smokey Mountain Memories"), her religious song "Calm on the Water" and her duet with Willie Nelson "I Really Don't Want To Know"."Burlap and Satin" is mainly known by Dolly's ardent fan base as being the record that contains a handful of songs Dolly wrote for the film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" that didn't make the cut. Among them is the beautiful "A Cowboy's Ways" (a song Burt Reynolds recorded for the soundtrack, but was never included and only shown on network airings of the movie). "A Gamble Either Way" is another song from the film, but also not included. The only song from this collection released as a single is the very much '80's sounding "Potential New Boyfriend", a song Dolly has stated as being the worst song she ever recorded with the video being even worse as she hardly appeared in it. Still, the song did go to #20 country. The song was also released as an extended 12 inch extended dance re-mix single. This album went all the way to #5 country and #127 pop and despite public demand for it on compact disc, it has still never seen a CD release as of late 2011. |
